What should i buy? Lens or flash?

ok so i have a sony a200 dSLR and i'm not sure if i should get an external flash or a really nice lens. i'm really on a budget so i dont really know what i'm looking for. do dSLR flashes all fit everything? or are they somewhat proprietary?

i was looking at this:

because i want a lens that will give me some nice DOF.

and for flashes i'm really not sure what i need to be looking for, i live in windsor ontario so i'd like something local if you can find it, www.henrys.com is where i'd like to look because there is one really close to my dorm.

edit, i just realized that was the opposite of what i wanted. i'm really just a beginner with f-stop and aperature.

If you are expecting automated features including TTL flash metering, the flash should be specifically designed for your system. This generally means sticking to the speedlight that is of the same brand as your system. There are some third party flashes that might claim full TTL Digital SLR compatibility.

As for Lens or Flash, it depends on what you shoot.
