I guess I meant, what type of photographer would you advertise yourself as? All around photographer or just advertise as certain types for pay but as a hobby, do everything else.

Considering this is the beginners forum, I don't think many of us are too concerned about advertising ourselves... and if you are concerned about advertising yourself you are either in the wrong forum, or shouldn't be concerned about advertising yourself.

Good answer Boom! I'm a beginner and as I progress, I do advertise myself as a budget wedding photographer, (being both single and 2nd photographer), then as a portrait photographer. Engagement pretty much falls in between as a wedding portrait photographer. With portrait I learn the directing which helps with weddings and engagement shots. Although I do not like to direct too much as I find candid shots are what captures the best shots, but giving a little direction sometimes help also.

So in the end, that's pretty much the direction I want to take my photography skills to and focus on.

Could we all become professionals? Sure! With practice, patience and courage. But I wouldn't stop posting here just because I made it. You know?

I live life on spur of the moment. So what I take pictures depends on where I am in my life. I take pictures of what I think is interesting to me. I enjoy taking pictures of what I want, when I want.

Is that all it takes?

ummm.....or maybe photography gene by birth?

neither of those, you just need high dollar pro equipment.

I have seen with my own eyes a photographer who used the iphone to do an entire photoshoot.

This pro-photographer thing looks pretty simple to me... buy a camera, hang a shingle, go take pictures.

Some people have a different definition of a pro-photographer than others - welcome to the world.

This is the problem with people these days. People likes to "specialize". There is so much possibilities out there. Why would you want to do the same thing over and over.

I'm not so sure I agree with that at all.... I've been in my career long enough to know a lot of people who try, just don't have it. I've even been on the "trying" end of it a few times myself.

They just don't try hard enough.

Practice, you have try over and over and over until you have the perfection. If you think you're good enough, show your work, if anything's missing, learn from your mistake and go at it again.

Patience, have patience, to try it over and over and over until you get it right. You may give up after 5 even 10 tries but maybe you're the type of person that needs to try 100 times to figure it out and get it right. So sure, there are people you may have seen trying over and over, but they haven't tried just enough. Unless you're truly handicapped and or mentally challagned then I see no human being, not capable of doing something.

Courage, don't be scared, if people tell you you can't do it, don't back down, go out there and prove yourself and show others what you are capable of. Discouragement is the number one reason people don't succeed. They just feel "crap, my work sux, I'll never be good" and stop caring to try hard enough.

We can debate all day and night about it but w/out any of those 3 things, (or Photography gene) I guarantee you will not succeed.

WITH those three things, can you gurantee I WILL succeed?

That's up to you. I don't speak for you. But w/out them, you can't. Fair enough?

Actually, I now disagree with you on two fronts.... I also know several people who have managed to become quite successful without much patience, practice, or courage. And having those, certainly aren't a recipe for success either.

In my opinion, you either have it or you don't.... If you've got it, you don't need patience, practice, or courage... it just comes naturally. If you don't have it, no level of patience, practice, or courage is going to get it for you.

It may sound good coming from PBS on an after-school special, but I don't see it working that way much in the real world. I just think you are sugar coating a harsh life reality.... you just can't be anything you want to be.
