Where to do decent editing.. on a budget

LR rocks, and for the price of admission, it's a no brainer.

^ So what is she suppose to do about photo layering and cloning? You know, 2 specific things she mentioned. All these LR fanboys and girls crack me up. LR is a wonderful piece of software, but it simply won't do the things PS does.

I use LR for almost everything. The clone tool is amazing. It is not only an amazing piece of software for organizing your images, but you can do all of your edits very quickly and w/o much effort. Have you driven LR lately? :)

I use both, have you looked at Photoshop (even Elements) lately? Does all the clone stuff LR does with layering as well.

I think Elements would be a great program as well, but there is going to be a learning curve. If the OP doesn't want to put the time into learning a editing program then Elements will only take her so far.

I'd a very old version of Photoshop. But after I got the LR3 and later upgrade to LR4, I seldom need to use Photoshop anymore. Of course, there are times that I will need to choose "Edit in Photoshop" from within LR. But for the most part, LR can do what I need to do.

If I do not have any post processing software and need to buy one to start with, LR will be my choice. It just make my life a lot easier and I am not even talks about photo organizing. Can Photoshop or GIMP do what LR do as far as Photo Processing goes, yes for sure! But LR just make it easier, as least for me. Cropping, rotation, exposure/highlight/shadow, CA issue, Sharpening / noise reduction, color saturation, spots removal etc.

The only regret I had after using LR was ... I wish I start using it earlier. :) Cheers!

Seriously, Elements. If you want to be serious about photography, there's no excuse not to learn the Photoshop line. Everything else is for amateurs. If that weren't the case, I would let you know. Adobe owns the most market share. The rest is divided into several pieces of software that few people use. Accordingly, there's not as much training and information available to help you with those other programs, and the major plugins are designed to work with Adobe (and in some instances other contenders -- to use the word loosely -- like Aperture). You can try to fight Adobe, but it's the heavyweight champ.

Posts relating to or advocating software piracy will NOT be tolerated on TPF! How would you like it if Adobe "downloaded" one of your images and used it as the cover on their next release of Lightroom with no credit or payment to you?

Um I have no idea what you are talking about.. I am not wanting a pirated version.. Im just looking for something within my budget and to expand my skills.

What about the last version of Lightroom? The Adobe Lightroom 4 is around $95 in Amazon. If you are a student, the Lightroom5 is around $80. You can download a free trial version and see if that is something for you.
I have dappled in photo layering and cloning
Then LR would not satisfy. LR is suited more towards photo organization not heavy editing.

I want to share my talent with you at an affordable price. If you look through my albums and are interested in setting up a session please send me a message for details.
Yes, when she posted her FB link.

i think im perfectly allowed to be in the business and go at my own speed.
Of course you are, as long as you're doing everything legal, you are under no obligation to buy an expensive program. For a hobbyist PS is a pricey pill to swallow, but for the vast majority of professionals, having PS is a basic business expense. Judging from your stated needs and the fact that you're doing this for money, it should be high on your priority list.

I have just tried LR today on the free trial version.. And I like some of the "effects" but like you noticed I like to do a lot of different things to my photos. So any suggestions for something that has a lot of effects I can do such as infuse light into a picture, make it matte soft, etc.. Like I said I use ipiccy at the moment but now starting to feel limited with its offered effects.

LR had things called presets you can purchase to get those after "effects." There are some free ones out there as well. I would just learn how to edit that way w/o the use of a filter or effect. Then you can control all aspects of it.
