Nothing is 'best' in its own right - it all depends on what you are doing with it. Pro cameras are heavy, entry level cameras are light - if you are hiking, that matters. Pro cameras are water tight, entry level cameras are not - that matters to sports photographers. And so on. What is your intended use? What size hands do you have? We need more.

As stated above there is no overall best. There are however cameras that are better suited for one type of photography over others.

So what do you intend to shoot the most? Please don't be lazy and say a bit of everything be cause you'll get a camera suggested for everything and good at nothing.
Budget is also important to know so we don't suggest a bunch of gear you can't afford.

Go to the store, check out the cameras in person and see which one fits your hand most comfortably. Are the buttons in the right spot for you? Can reach all the buttons comfortably? That's the Best advice ever giving to me when I was buying my first DSLR and I'm passing it along.

There is no "best" DSLR to get, as of 2016 nearly any DSLR will giving you similar results and performance.

The best DSLR is the one You like and will use.

Your not buying a DSLR, you are buying into an entire system. Canon and Nikon have the most complete system of lenses and accessories. With that in mind understand that most photographers don't need nor will they use much of the lenses and accessories available from Canon and Nikon.

Check out the cameras you like then check out the systems by those makes and see if they have what you will need for the type of photography you will be doing.

The BEST DSLR is probably the new Hasselblad H6D 100. 100 megapixels of pure resolving fury. It rings in at a paltry $33,000.

The best one is the one that suits your needs best. Professionals generally choose between the Nikon or Canon's full frame offerings. They aren't really made with beginners in mind, but you want the best? That's the route I'd go.

I would say Nikon D5. Sold a couple recently to this guy who wanted to get into photography.
