crop factor only really means something to somebody if they've had a 35mm film camera, and are "used" to what the focal lengths get them in terms of what you can get in the frame.

If your first SLR is a digital crop sensor, then crop factor isn't something you really need to worry about, just get used to what your lens does, and if you want wider, get a smaller number, if you want longer, get a bigger number- simple.

I've never used 35mm film, so thanks for the clarification.
