When I read the thread title...Why carry so many DSLRs?

I was expecting to see a photo (or read a question) about somebody holding 6 or seven cameras.

But then I read...

I have seen some photographers carried 2 to 3 DLSR cameras.

that's not 'so many'.

You might ask a plumber or a mechanic why they have 'so many' wrenches. Sometimes you need different tools to get the job done, sometimes you need more than one of the same tool etc. Sometimes, you just need to impress the ladies... :er:

This reminds me of the one time I was out shooting nature in the mountains and I came across a guy who had a dark ND filter mounted on his lens (we were shooting in the forest with poor light), I asked him why he has the filter mounted, he must be losing exposure stops from it, and he replied: "This makes the lens look more "pro""

The only thing I could say was "Uh..cool."

Also I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that for many photography jobs you always need to have a spare with you in case your main camera breaks down (Im talking about big events, like weddings and such)

Not just weddings. It would be really unprofessional of any working photographer (any photog getting payed for services) to have to cancel a shoot because of equipment failure. That's why people that get payed to do this are so fanatical about off loading cards and backing up photos. My cards general come out of the camera and go straight to a computer where they're transfered to a server that has drive sharing.

Grabbing another camera is quicker than swapping lenses.

Yep. I intend to add a full frame to my collection soon for this reason (currently using the Canon 7D and a crappy point-and-shoot panasonic). This is especially true when switching between super zoomy and wide angle lenses.

Here is a simple equation to explain it all.

C=(N+1)

It can also be rewritten as:

C=(S-1)

C=Amount of cameras you should have.
N=Amount of cameras you currently have.
S=Amount of cameras that will force your wife to separate from you.

This works for many things! (Like computer games, bicycles, and hookers)
