Wide Angle

Hello.
I am wanting to add a wide angle to my camera bag, but am nervous just going on a whim and buying one. I have read a lot about the Sigma 10-20mm. Any suggestions? I don't have a huge budget, but also don't want to settle on something that is super cheap. I have a Canon T3i.

the sigma is a great lens, has very good performance. There's also the tokina 11-16 2.8 which was my favorite wide angle for dx.

Why would you buy a lens on a whim? Do you know why you need it? If you don't know why you need something, you won't know what you need. If your reason is precise, and you know your budget and what your photography demands, the decision should be easy.

I also have the Toke 11-16mm f2.8. It's a good lens, but being older and wiser, here are my thoughts...

First, I wouldn't care much about the zoom range. A lens like this is generally used as wide as it gets, at least by me, so I'd go for the widest lens, not really the one with the biggest range.

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about the widest aperture. The constant f2.8 is nice, but if you want to play with DoF, that won't do much. At such wide angles, your DoF is always going to be big.

In short, widest angle and image quality should take priority over zoom range and widest aperture.
