Sparky.... I hope it went well.. and that you had fun! I would have willing gone off the building with you... I love rappelling! Have even base jumped a few times...
Look forward to hearing about it!
It was much hotter than the last two times I did this. But there was a decent breeze to help compensate for it.
It was also a much more comfortable trip this year. They had different harnesses which allowed you to 'lean back' and take a breather, instead of always 'sitting up' no matter what. They also had different descenders than last year's video shows. Much easier to operate, both in terms of force needed to descend as well as they have a 'sweet spot' for your weight. Once you find that spot, it's pretty steady going down.
I took about 20 minutes to make the trip. I stopped several times not only to rest (yes, it IS a lot of work!), as well as take in the view (which I did in last years' video). Yeah, I could always go into the building and look out the window, but it's just not the same as hanging off a rope outside the glass.
This is my third year raising funds for Special Olympics in this event. It's their fourth year, and they don't know of anyone who's 'jumped' all four years. However, there's six of us who have jumped the past 3.
I would suggest to ANYONE here they Google the event in their state and sign up if Special Olympics is sponsoring on Over The Edge trip. It's well worth the effort... not just the rappeling, but knowing you help out a worthy cause. It's not every day you get a chance to toss yourself off a building in a sanctioned function like this. I did it two years ago just to cross it off my Bucket List..... and had so much freakin' fun I'll do a Four-pete next year.
