If you're relatively close to the Twin Cities, I would think the 18-70mm would come up fairly often. In Seattle, I feel like I see one every week! They seem to sell for around $150 to $200, used. PS - I have the 18-70 and like it very much.

As far as sharpness, i think they're about equal.

But, I think that's mostly because the build quality is actually not bad... and that extra zoom range is nice to have. Not sure how it compares optically with the 18-55... again, I have very limited experience.
