WTH is wrong with my camera timer photos!?

Captain Napalm, that is universal and his s- is really wack.

I am so frustrated and yet because I almost never am in a photo this doesn't necessarily effect me that much but, it would be nice to know the deal. I have a Nikon7000 and whenever I have mounted it to my tripod, arranged for the timer to fire the shot, NO MATTER WHAT setting I am on....it is out of focus. (not even slightly...totally blurred) I never shoot auto anything but I have tried literally every setting. I have closed down my aperture A lot and shot in A- mode, S mode...I have chosen my focus point and allowed the camera too. I have tried everything. I don't understand what is wrong here. LOL..again, I don't take self portraits often but just for knowing's sake I would love to know what it up.
Does your lens have VR? Is it on or off? When shooting on a tripod, you (almost always) have to turn the stabilization off because if you don't, the system will actually cause the lens to move and give you a bit of motion blur.

But certainly check how you are focusing as well.

make sure in your Customs Setting Menu
a1 & a2 in Autofocus section
that both the AF-C & AF-S priority selection
is set to FOCUS

if they are set to RELEASE then they will shoot without focusing.
That was my focusing problem when I was trying to do Selfies ...

as someone who has taken a selfie every day for the last 160+ days, your best bet is to pre-focus and then to switch to manual focus. If you have have to focus once you're in frame, make sure you don't use a single focus point. It is hard to land that point on a strong contrast area for focus when you'e not behind the camera helping.
