17-55 DX thoughts

Hey all. At the end of April I'm heading out on route 66 for two weeks (driving the whole length). I have a D7000 and my main travel lens is the 16-85 DX at the moment. I also have the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 and the Nikon 70-300mm FX lens.

I have some cash to spend on rentals. I'm wondering how that really expensive 17-55 f/2.8 DX stacks up to the 16-85? I feel like it may be worth renting for an epic trip like this . I'll mostly be photographing scenery and buildings,

It's a good rental price. I don't think I'd ever buy that lens as I'd like to go FX in a year or so.

Anyhow... I'm tangenting now. Thoughts?
