The SB-600 head can be rotated (left to right) and tilted (up and down) when the camera is attached to the hot shoe (located on the top of the view finder). I don't know about your camera, but on my D-90 you can take the flash off the camera, place it any place you want to and set your camera to "commander mode" under bracketing/flash in your menu and shoot wirelessly. It makes things very easy. otherwise you have to use a wire. The flash also has a pull out wide angle screen that drops over the flase element. Very versitile. Tom Beard

get a 50mm f1.8 (will have to manually focus though) and a sb-600

I second this! Not many lenses out there for that price that would be better than what you already have. The 50mm is hands down the one lens that every photographer should own. The SB 600 flash is great as well. Do not get the 400. The 600 offers so much more. My 2cents

do you have any samples posted of the 600 with the 50mm?

Really? Why has mine not been used in over two years other than in test shots and in comparison with the 35mm lens. The f/1.8 IS NOT A BAD LENS, but it's not exactly the bees knees.

An external flash for typical shooting (even with kit lenses, all makes) will yield a superior keeper count IMO.

what cheap lens for around that same price would you suggest? originally i wanted the 35mm and people spun me to the 50mm

how do you bounce it off the wall if its on the hotshoe and the lens is aimed at your subject?

-with the sb-600 you can angle the flash to be aimed at different angles other than just straight at your subject, so for example, most people bounce the light off the ceiling so the light produce is softer on the subject. (I think....)

I do not suggest a cheap lens to begin with. I think I suggested a flash. :D

You have a D3100, so you will be somewhat limited for choosing a lens that will autofocus, AF-S only. Unfortunately, I do not trust my eyes anymore for manual focus other than macro work where I can take the time to move the camera forwards and backwards to nail focus. Otherwise I rely..... no, I depend on autofocus. But then again, I have old eyes.

im 27. and for now i have somewhat good eyes. although cheap everything ive read is that the 50mm is a great lens. i will be getting that flash first and foremost.
