Alright I have 300 bucks to spend. i have these lenses Nikon 18-55mm, Nikon Micro-Nikkor Macro lens - 85 mm - F/3.5, Nikon 55-200mm. I wanted to get the nikon 35mm lens...do you think its neccessary if i already have the 18-55? whats the benefits of having that lens? I do wanna take portraits but i also have the 85mm macro. I also need to buy a flash. was going with the sb-400. i have a nikon d3100. I enjoy taking landscape pictures, rivers, ponds, lakes, extra. But i also want to get into portraits. thanks for your imput!

Sb-600 flash

only reason i had said the 400 is because i read before on ken rockwells site that it was lighter and good for the price. is there that big of a difference between the 2? how could i compare in pictures what one verses the other would do in the same pic? thanks!

Just trust us. The 600 is worth the extra $$. I shot with one all christmas day- uploading the photos now.

so you'd take the flash over a 35mm lens?

Check out my Xmas thread in this sub forum, all of the photos were taken using a SB-600 on the hotshoe.

Given your current equipment, the SB600 is definitely going to be of more benefit than a 35mm prime. The prime will give you better IQ if you're a pixel-peeper, BUT having a proper speedlight will open up a whole new photographic world to you. The SB400 is cheap, but really isn't that much better than your on-board flash to make it worth the money.

thanks alot guys. I guess I just do not understand flashes all that much coming from point and shoots. I also just thought well if it lights the room i can take the pic. i always assume bigger flash whites the picture....can you take close ups with that flash. (5ft, in a room) without drowning the pic out?

I want a sb400 for vacation walking around. I'll probably get one. That being said, I have a 35mm 1.8 and a SB-600. I am so stoked about the SB-600. I took 100 pics christmas day with the SB-600 on the hotshoe. The awesome thing is you can hold the camera in portrait orientation, swivel the SB-600 at 90' twice and still bounce light directly from ceiling.

i am knew and have no idea what all this stuff means. hotshoe (googling now) or how to bounce off walls. i assumed you just put the flash on the camera aim and shoot...im guessing thats wrong?

hotshoe means the flash is on the camera, not on a tripod by itself wirelessly controlled. Bouncing the flash off wall or ceiling equals softer ( awesome) light.

how do you bounce it off the wall if its on the hotshoe and the lens is aimed at your subject?

A hooker......
