As a new DSLR user, having just moved from the Konica Minolta A200 Prosumer (with tiltable LCD Live View) I must admit that the OLY E510 originally caught my eye for its Live View feature, the 40D now continuing the DSLR development.

However I must admit that when I had the prosumer 90% use of the Live View LCD was in a "tilted" position - for those awkward places that using the viewfinder wasn't an option. For me limiting the OLY/40D LCDs to no movement seriously limits the usefulness of the Live View function - so much so that I decided against buying an OLY E510 & chose the Samsung GX-10 instead

If they had a larger buffer for shooting RAW, then I would upgrade, but I just can't see myself upgrading for the few features that changed, as they are just not a huge deal to me. I am investing heavily in glass right now, with all intentions of picking up a full frame next.

I see we are in the same boat. I have the 30d as well which I love. The difference is not enough to sway me from my plan to move on to FF.

Regarding glass, yes, I think I need a support group, like a 12 step program. :lmao: There is so many great lenses and so little time (& money.)

Interesting. Yes, I can see tiltable Live View (tLV?) to be quite a useful tool.

I dont really care about the live view feature, i prefer the viewfinder, getting a full frame camera would be nice but the price jump from 1200-1500 to about 2500 just isnt worth it for me. At least not yet.

I wouldn't under-estimate the usefulness of a Live View, given the right implementation I know through experience that it definitely enhances the photographic options.
I'm sure in future Tiltable Live View on DSLRs will become common-place & that many of the DSLR "patriots" will actually see the benefits rather than worry about its association with the "prosumers" of old.

I have a strong sense that the upcoming OLY E1 may just have tiltable Live View, after all the E330 managed it

I started out on an Olympus c-5050 and it had live view with one that was adjustable to different positions and I used it a lot. I'm pleased to see this will have a live view, but too bad it's not adjustable/rotatable.

I am disapointed to see the AF sensors are still only 9, regardless of the improvement. I think I'd like to see it doubled.

How much do you think the 5D replacement will be? 2500 or 3500? I'm looking to upgrade from my Rebel XT and the 40D is a very nice jump for me, but I'm wondering if FF is too much for my ability and not worth the cost.

For those on a tight budget (I know you're gonna laugh at me!) The Canon S3-IS (well, S5 now) is a really great camera with a ton of features and the quality of image (while nothing to the Rebel) is MUCH better than most point and shoot cameras. I mean, if you don't want an SLR, that is.. The 40D is a like a dream camera and I'll probably save up for it, but I love my Rebel And I still have & use my S3, which I also love.

I just pre-ordered a 40D - a few hours ago. Aaaaaahhhh .......

My last SLR was an A2 bought about ten years ago, preceeded by a Spotmatic in the 60s (which I still lovingly fondle occasionally, it has lost none of its charm). P&S's have sustained me these last years since I went digital and dumped the Canon - thin gruel for an old darkroom hound.

O joy! BUT, am I to succumb to a severe case of buyer's remorse? 30D prices are being slashed, and is the 40 really that much better?

if you are talking USD, then the 5D mkII (?) would probably not be introduced below 3000 is my guess.

Depends not so much on your abilities, but on what and how you shoot.

-Hopefuly up the burst so that it actually lies above the 3fps niche in the entry level department (a pro body should be faster than low end consumer)
-add more MP
-live view ...... I actually dislike this on the newer cameras, it makes them more like point and shoots
-sensor cleaning

anyhting else to be seen on a new 5d? Maybe a super high ISO mode?

I think they will be leery of increasing the frame rate. They don't want to cannibalise sales of their higher end, 1D series cameras. The 40D has already been called the little brother of the 1D mk III, and may be taking some sales away from the more expensive model.

I would think that a new 5D would get several of the improvements seen on the 40D. Bigger screen, WiFi battery grip, AF improvements, more custom modes, anti-dust, probably the live view (it seems to be the 'new thing'). If it has a Digic II sensor, it will surely have the newer Digic III technology.

Seeing as Nikon just put out a camera with the equivalent of ISO 125400 (or what ever it is)....I would think that Canon would love to meet or exceed that...even if that setting was a noisy as a two year old.

simple answer (my wishlist):

- better quality sensor (lower noise, wider dynamic range, 16 bits instead of 12)

- weather sealing

- better display

- programmable direct print button (would like to set it to mirror lock up, who needs direct print anyway)

it will probably get some more MP, maybe 5 fps, and it will get some other rather useless features like the dust re-distribution function
