5 Quick Ways To Tell You Are Not A Photographer Yet

Looking at this guy's photos, I wouldn't take much of his advice. Nothing in his portfolio really catches my eye.

I kind of disagree with the first one. Owning a BIG camera is OK. The issue is whether you have the knowledge and skills using it. Interestingly enough, he did not mention about the BIG lens.

I've actually been informed that so-and-so is a better photographer than me because their lens is bigger (insert exaggerated gestures to demonstrate lens size) when I'm happily shooting with my 55mm. Yes, I know my lens is small. It suits the purpose for what I'm shooting. I don't want mega-telephoto to shoot kids inside a building!

ETA: I do own some bigger lenses, but rarely use them, since I don't need telephoto much.

It's not BAD, just a lot of over brightened eyes. Otherwise? Everything is a good, basic head shot that also includes a little bit of the personality and isn't the same mundane headshot. Some of it I really kinda like... some of it has some issues pretty obvious to another photog, but a client? Eh! I'd hire him in a heartbeat if I needed a corporate America head shot.

I think he's pretty brilliant being a "head shot" photographer. If I could make my money doing head shots it'd be a whole lot easier and a whole lot less headache. I know it's not going to fly where I am at-I think there are less than 2500 actual residents of my town... But he's in the big apple and what he's doing is easy, repetitive and necessary.

I guess I have mixed feelings on the guy's comments...I mean, I am a certified Interpreter for the Deaf by profession, not a "signer" there is a difference...I see where there is a need to "protect" the profession you're in. On the other hand, I will always acknowledge when someone is skilled in Sign Language whether they have a degree/certification or not. I've spent years taking pictures, photos, snapshots, whatever they're labeled and I feel pretty confident in my "work". I LOVE photography and have for years. Reading stuff like his makes me a little gunshy about asking advice...while I am mature enough to take criticism and want/need it, I sure don't want to feel "looked down on" because I may or may not fit his definition of a photographer, or I may simply goof and call myself a "photographer" when I haven't earned that right. If it was meant as a joke, I get it, but was it?

Hard to say... maybe meant partially as a joke, but there some egotistic teeth in it also! I wouldn't worry about it.. we do have an IGNORE button, and if you need to know where it is, just ask!!

while i agree with you to some degree, try shooting a le mans/motorcycle race with an iphone. as the guy said he can't strobe so everything is continous lighitng. much different than off camera flash.
