As a portrait? The lighting is lackluster, the wb seems a touch warm, the framing is a bit awkward (too much headroom and you cut off arms/legs), and the background color is rather strong, and IMO, distracting. But your son's adorable, and seems to be cooperating (which is always a plus!). For next time, eye-contact is a pretty important (I'm sure it's difficult with a youngin'), and maybe try and use some more dynamic lighting? and a less distracting/intense background.

Oh crap is it that bad? I did get a lot of eye contact in other pictures, but I thought this one was fitting to his personality: Never doing what I want haha. Thank you for being honest though. I appreciate it.

I agree with Jake.

crop is just weird, don't use that red as a background. Get it further from your son. I like flat light with kids, but that is a preference.

practice practice and practice. I know how difficult is photographing children.

There's not a lot of light values (darks to bright whites) in this image. It lacks dynamic or intense light, that would interest the viewer. It doesn't make me say "whoah" when I view it. It just looks like dull light coming from household light sources. That's all.

I love the face. I think the expression works, makes you wonder what's he thinking? what's he up to? LOL

I think mostly there's more space than you need above his head. I'd think about making copies and trying some crops. Maybe crop the top and a little of the left side til it looks nicely balanced. Or it would have been nice to be able to see his hands so he doesn't look so cut off; maybe try one where you crop the bottom and the left side some, eliminate that part of his knee and edge of the thumb; then crop the top til it looks balanced, that could feature his face. Could take playing around with copies and see what looks best; sometimes I save and come back to edits later and then what looks back will stand out more. I think if just the edge of something shows it can make for a distraction, I find I'm wondering - what is that? that's why it can be distracting.

With some adjustment you could get a nice picture out of this, then next time you're taking photos try thinking about the framing or even practice framing (which can be done without taking a picture, just by looking and noticing what looks good in your viewfinder/viewscreen). The face is priceless, some editing and this could be a charming photo of him.

If the look he is giving you really speaks towards his personality then that's what matters, even if he's not looking at the camera (which is generally preferred). He is very cute. How old is he? The crop is the main thing that I don't care for. I hope you don't mind, I did a quick edit to see what I would do if it was one of my pictures.

I cropped it and warmed it up a bit. I also thought he looked a little pink so I adjusted the tint, upped the exposure, and then sharpened the overall picture. I don't know what color his hair normally is but I thought it might be taking on a redder tint due to the red background so I decreased the saturation just on his hair.

Did you do anything to edit his lips or are they normally so dark and full? Very pretty, I wish I had lips like that!

The picture I originally posted wasn't edited at all (except for two red spots on his face; he's teething). He got my husband's lips (and his lovely long eyelashes) haha.

I like the cropping you did, but he looks a bit yellowish in this one... I tried to warm him up in PSE, but he came out yellowish then too (I didn't end up saving it though). Is that something I'll just have to deal with?
