This shot is a of a cool birdhouse and this ended up being my favorite shot.

I was playing with lighting to create some depth and shadows.

Let me know what you all think.

With the lens I have, EF-S18-55mm Kit lens, would it have been better to move further back and cropped it?
 
Yes.
Abstracts aren't simply something unrecognizable. Abstracts say something through their shape and/or form and colour/lack of.

No need to be sorry.

I found the shape of the bent fork along with the shadow and color of the background interesting.
I was trying to get the focus on the top left side trying to apply the Ro3 in a creative way. But as KmH also mentioned the Dof was way too shallow because of it.

Agreed. I think since the focal point is the "metal" object the curves in the back and underneath should be recognized and focused on. The other blue stuff doesn't really matter. (hope I made sense)

I think the solution is a slightly larger aperture number... or smaller aperture which every way you want to look at it.
