Yeah I ran into the same thing. I did, however, see a notice on
Adorama's site too......Too bad they close down for so long. They lost $2,000 worth of business from me alone....I can't image how much they lose from everyone else.
At
Adorama we do appreciate that our closing times can be inconvenient to some of our potential customers.
Adorama's owner is an observant orthodox Jewish gentleman, whose beliefs prohibit him - his family and his business - from operating on the Sabbath and on many of the religious holidays (which all begin an hour prior to sunset the evening before the day of the holiday, which is why we close early on Fridays).
We can't employ non-Jews here during those days, because to do so would involve the company conducting business - which is forbidden in Jewish Law.
Most holidays are actually only one or two days; two are week-long holidays. We do try to minimize inconvenience to our customers, by publicizing our closing dates well in advance.
After the holiday(s) end(s), we do reopen our sales and shipping departments as soon as possible in order to deal with the inevitable backlog of orders.
We would also take on add additional staff in the customer service, sales and shipping departments if necessary to help reduce backlogs and speed up the service to our customers.
In this era of 24-hour commerce which seems to take for granted that we all sleep with our i-phones under our pillows and work a relentless 60 or 70 hours a week, this is a special time for us to be with family and friends.
I guess it's unusual to find that there really are still people who consider their spiritual duty to be more important than making an honest buck out of our customers at every opportunity. I receive frequent emails from customers who state that in this day and age it is comforting to know there are people around who do not place money before all else.
Many businesses in the US and elsewhere in the world force employees to work on holidays when the time is better spent with their friends and families - or just relaxing by themselves
We are grateful for the understanding of our customers that this is an important element of our owner's value system. Perhaps the following links to articles in the Washington Post & the New York Times will help to make some sense of our closure policies:

I'm pretty sure they could care less and obviously consider some things more important to them than chasing a buck.
In my opinion
B&H and
Adorama are the 2 best photography stores on the planet......
Thank you.
Yeah, I think the refusal to deal with them seeing how they are honoring the Jewish holidays is a bit extreme......Every time you add something to your cart it tells you, when you go to check out it tells you... It tells you for a week ahead of time or more.
I am sorry you were on a public computer and didn't see it, but it also should have been on your order confirmation.
I order regularly from
Adorama and
B&H and (aside from the numerous Jewish holidays) I have had the best of service from
Adorama when I order. Things arrive usually quicker than I expect unless I use the upgraded shipping and then it always arrives on schedule......
Adorama has a very small storefront compared to
B&H.
True we may not have as much immediate floor space, but still an inventory well in excess of 80,00 new items and around 25,000 used! All of our in-store sales associates should be able to help you with any item you'd like to take a look at.
Also, we have an amazing new Pro Department: pictures here -
Adorama Pro Imaging Grand Opening
I have had one problem with an order arriving damaged and they were pretty awesome taking care me.
Yep, the numerous Jewish holidays are a pain in the butt. They are closed at least once a month for something.
We close every Saturday, but in terms of the Jewish holidays
Adorama is actually only closed for
1 day in February for Purim,
1 week in March or April for Passover
2 days in May or June for Shavuot
1 day in July for Tisha B`Av
3 days in September/October for New Year & Yom Kippur
1 week in September or October for Succot
It is NOT reason enough to take a chance with one of the rinky dink camera operations out there on the web. You hear more about people getting screwed with camera gear than anything else.
A quick check with the customer feedback at resellerratings.com always helps to ID the stores where you should take care......
BTW I'm only ever an email away for advice or after-sales support with any order from
Adorama:
