There is an article on slashdot Lies Programmers Tell Themselves and one of the lies really applies to new photographers also.

"Something must be wrong with this library (that is used successfully by everyone else)" is easily moved into Something must be wrong with this camera body/lens/software (that is used successfully by everyone else) because it's not working for me.
