B&H Has Lost My Business

As long as internal policies don't affect their business practices I'll continue to order from them.

Everyone working there did so BY CHOICE and I don't see a parade of Hispanics trying to get out the door. If they didn't like the working conditions they were free to leave yet chose to stay.

This is exactly how I feel about it. If it was such a problem, they'd have left, and they'd have made a MUCH bigger deal of it in the media. Employment is voluntary... there is strong favoritism at some of my employers as well based on factors I may not agree with.. and guess what: if I don't like it, I can leave.

It's not my job to play social justice warrior and boycott a company, especially when doing so would force me to shop somewhere with inferior customer service.

I think we should all tread very carefully at present because this thread is drifting into politics and could easily slide downhill and get locked.

Rather depends on whether there are many jobs for them to go to. Jobs may be voluntary, but feeding their families and keeping a roof over their heads is less so. Giving people a job does not justify discrimination even if you don't hear them complaining.

If they are so unhappy and feel they are treated unfairly there is other jobs or there is always schooling for a better education for a better job in the future. We all have choices, so if they can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

.....[speculation]....Adorama ..... is within the same family? ...

And that is what it is. Speculation. (Much like the contents of the article IMHO). And it's incorrect - unless the fact that one employee is a distant cousin by marriage of another employee counts as being within the same family?

Truth be told we are all related at some point back in time. The point was not to bring discredit to Adorama but to illustrate that Internet rumours run rampant. The advent of the sites posing as legitimate news sources is so bad that even google and yahoo have started to try and limit them.

Yes, LOL! Not limited to internet sites.

Having been a publisher of three newspapers, I'm a little more aware of how damaging a headline can be. I'm reminded of a classic story. I hope this doesn't offend anyone because it illustrates perfectly how something innocent can be twisted into something ugly.

THE PASTOR'S ASS

A priest wanted to raise money for his church and on being told there was a fortune in horse racing, decided to purchase one and enter it in the races.

However, at the local auction, the going price for a horse was so high that he ended up buying a donkey instead. He figured that, since he had it, he might as well go ahead and enter it in the races.

To his surprise the donkey came in third. The next day the local paper carried this headline:

PASTOR'S ASS SHOWS

The priest was so pleased with the donkey that he entered it in the race again, and this time it won. The local paper read:

PASTOR'S ASS OUT FRONT

The Bishop was so upset with this kind of publicity that he ordered the priest not to enter the donkey in another race. The next day the local paper headline read:

BISHOP SCRATCHES PASTOR'S ASS

This was too much for the Bishop, so he ordered the priest to get rid of the donkey. The priest decided to give it to a nun in a nearby convent. The local paper, hearing of the news, posted the following headline the next day:

NUN HAS BEST ASS IN TOWN

The Bishop fainted. He informed the nun that she would have to get rid of the donkey, so she sold it to a farmer for ten dollars. The next day the paper read:

NUN SELLS ASS FOR $10

This was definitely too much for the Bishop, so he ordered the nun to buy back the donkey and lead it to the plains where it could run wild. The next day the headlines read:

NUN ANNOUNCES HER ASS IS WILD AND FREE

The Bishop was buried the next day.

Not always as easy as you suggest. We all have choices but not always the same or equal choices.

After years and many thousands of dollars of purchases from B&H I can no longer do business with them after reading this article
http://nypost.com/2016/02/25/bh-forced-hispanic-workers-to-use-separate-bathroom-feds/
on their discrimination of minority employees and hiring practices. Actually I have heard rumors of this before, but a side of me did not want to believe it and treated them as rumors.

This article is a year old. It is full of accusations and allegations but there was not and is not a shred of proof.

There were not and are not separate unsanitary restrooms. There were not and are not undocumented workers. There were not and are not a group of workers who are denied benefits available to other employees. Regarding separate and unsanitary restrooms, Every person I know over the age of 14 owns a cell phone with a built-in camera, but we've never seen even one photo of these allegedly unsanitary restrooms. Why not? there aren't any and there never were any. There was no restroom discrimination, there is no restroom discrimination, there has never been any restroom discrimination.

The lack of conclusion is due to delaying tactics by B&H.
The lack of conclusion is due to the pace of negotiations, meetings among lawyers, etc. These are not set by B&H. Were it up to us, this would have been resolved months ago.

Others have passed judgement:
"In 2007, the national retail chain paid $4.3 million to settle a separate discrimination case."
This is inaccurate. There was a consent decree, not a settlement. At the time the EEOC attorney said “We commend B & H for working cooperatively with us to resolve this matter..."

Okay, but that doesn't actually mean that they were guilty of anything. It's very common for large businesses to pay settlements just to make a problem go away.
Indeed. More expedient, and considerably less expensive. Lawyers charge by the hour and they charge more for hearings and trials than to negotiate settlements. Did you ever plead guilty and pay the fine for a traffic summons or parking ticket? I have. When you contest them, you spend half-a-day in court and then if you're found guilty they pile additional court fees on top of the original fine. It is more expedient, and considerably less expensive to resolve things like this as efficiently as possible.

@henryp glad to see you weighed in. I haven't been what you might consider a large customer, but the purchases were large to me. I've always found your staff to be helpful and your service excellent.

It has happened to me. I once settled out of court for something I did not do because the cost of litigating it would be more than the settlement. I call it predatory litigation. It isn't that uncommon.

They are like closed or offline every time I want to order something. Probably more coincidental but I laugh at it every time I think to order something. I pretty much try to support the local brick & mortar stores as much as possible. I was going to buy the X-T2 / grip / kit lens from them but it was on back order, so I looked up the Fujifilm dealers in my area and found one. They have the same pricing too.
