Canon EF-S 55-250mm Image Stabilizer question

Hi all,

I just have a question regarding the image stabilizer on this lens (Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS). I know it has a feature to disarm the stabilizer when taking shots of moving objects. I take pictures of airplanes and I find that the stabilizer seems to work well when panning. I was told not to use the IS when taking shots of moving objects, but is it OK to use when I'm panning with the flying aircraft?
