CC - baby pics

This is one of my favorite pictures because I like his expression. I know the background is messy. We were in the middle of playing. Aside from cleaning up the living room before taking pictures and not cutting off the very top of his head, how else can I improve? I really like this room because we have four large windows that are directly in front of him.

For this one, I was trying to keep the sun behind him (and also keep my hands on him as he climbed up the slide) I see pictures with neat sun flares (is that what they are called?). How do you do that? Also, I took this after reading up on using wider angles. I don't think I quite achieved what I was going for.

One thing you could do is shoot vertical, also known as 'portrait' orientation. People are generally tall and thin, why not shoot tall and thin? With respect to the second image, I would suggest a longer focal length and larger aperture to produce less of depth of field.

Well, the kid looks just as shocked as your reply, "Anyone?"

They aren't really shots that do much for me. . .a baby that looks stunned, and a baby on a slide where there is nothing beyond a striped sweatshirt, and shooting into the sun.

The clarity, and sharpness of the first pic is nice, but the expression isn't really working, imo. The lil dude looks startled. For the second, there really isn't anything photo worthy going on, imo...

If you want flares, use the search function, there are loads of threads on it. Sometimes they work, but as a rule, you typically don't shoot into the sun. . . unless you are going for a J.J Abrahms edited baby shot.
