I think I have some dust accumulated on my lenses. How do I clean my lens? Should I use lens cleaning liquids or just plain water?

Get a blower to blow the major dust off.

I then like to use Nikon's lens cleaning wipes.

Excellent advice! Get a good blower (I like the Giottos Rocket), NOT one of those cheap ones with a built in brush (they just trap crud) and use either disposable lens tissue or a micro-fibre lens cloth. Most lens cleaning solutions just leave smears and streaks on the elements. If it gets really dirty, then a drop or two of distilled water might be needed.

I had a cheap one that broke after a few uses, I use a blow dryer now, jsut use cool mode, Not the best but i do it in the the midle of the room in my bathroom as i assume there is least dust there.

I use the Giotto rocket and a fine hair brush to gently clean the lens.

  1. Blow dust off with a hand blower
  2. With a natural bristle brush, lightly brush away any remaining dust. Be sure to brush the filter threads too.
  3. If more cleaning is still needed, use a disposable lens tissue, put a 'huff' of breath on the lens surface and GENTLY wipe the lens in a circular motion.
  4. Liquid lens cleaner is only used to remove oily grunge from a lens (like skin oil finger prints). NEVER apply liquid directly on the glass, put it on a lens tissue, then GENTLY and carefully clean the lens surface.
