Cringe! Gahhh... Canon marketing gets even more diabolical. The creativity takes place in the photog's mind. Don't be decieved because Canon has trademarked a word.

I just didn't like how dark the statue turned out.

Use some fill flash. Shutter controls background exposure, and aperture controls flash exposure. You can change the ISO to get the combination you want.
