Golf ideas? - photographing swing by myself.

Hi all,

First post here! I'm looking for advice on how I can best photograph my golf swing.

Ideally, I would like a camera that can burst shoot for extended periods of time, perhaps 5 second bursts, at around 6-10 frames per second. I imagine using a wifi remote set on a timer. Perhaps even a hot-shoe motion sensor could work?

The priority here is image quality. I considered also using a 4K @ 30fps camera (lumix 4K, example) and just examining the frames that way. If I am correct, 4K is around 8 MP, which should be plenty.

Budget is around 1,000.

I think you'll get adequate results by using a flash that does that. Then your entire swing will be in one frame.

Or how about a video of your swing? Would that serve your purposes?

I am concerned with resolution. To explain, I want to capture the entirety of the swing and be able to zoom in and analyze it - for instance where the club face is at the top of the swing to where it meets the ball.

Also should have mentioned that I've been shooting film for 10 years, but it's becoming a real hassle - I'd like to start playing around with digital, so I wouldn't use this camera only for golf.

Use the remote multi shutter release setting if it's a Nikon D5100 or D7000. There may be others that have it also.

You're going to need to shoot video to get a sufficiently fast frame rate.
To get the club face at the top of the swing and where the club face meets the ball will require at least 2 cameras.

You may also need to prepare appropriate lighting.

However.
You could probably save a lot of money by having a PGA teaching pro do the video for you.

You can use a trigger. MIOPS has the capability to be triggered by external sensors. A motion sensor can do the trick.

I would have to agree with Keith about this. I've shot golf swings with a 7D mk II at 10 fps and you miss a lot of the swing even at that rate. I haven't done much video, but I would think that you would be better off with a faster frame rate of the 1080p, so that you could play it back in slow motion and be able to see the club head location throughout the swing.

Not sure about the $1,000 budget for this either.

Video will work, High Speed video will work better.

iphone placed on the top of your golf bag will work just fine. You can review the video almost frame to frame. If you having trouble with your swing spend the rest of your money on lessons from a PGA instructor

I've come to this same conclusion.

The Upcoming Nikon DL24-85 looks promising - 1080 @ 120 fps.

That's a great idea, especially with the slow motion capability.
