THEY'RE TRYIN TA TAKE OUR GGGUUUNNNSS!

'MERICA!

Josh; did the discussion turn to something about politics? Or was the topic more about guns than photography of guns?

FWIW: I would like to see some examples of good firearm photographs.

Lets see if an "assault" rifle can pick up a camera. Knowing them, it would probably look something like what a paparazzi would do.

It was in "off topic" which is for things other than photography and was just an article about an event that sparky saw.

it was stopped before anything could start. TPF like USA is a gun free zone. Lol

I have several ideas that I would like to photograph with guns but know it would cause nothing but problems with people around here. I've seen it happen here before.

If you do a search, there are actually quite a few firearm photo threads, and gun related discussions. It used to be that it was perfectly fine to talk about guns as long as it didn't turn political or something (which tends to happen, lol - but not always; some of those threads were quite long).

It didn't seem like there was anything in the thread in question to get it locked though. Unless just the fact that it was gun related was what got it locked - which is what it seems like to me. Although, apparently it is perfectly fine to talk about guns all you want in the subscribers section.

I closed it. :) Sorry the post I made didn't seem clear. The "hot topics" thread in OT, plus the OT forum description, includes certain topics that aren't going to fly. Religion, guns, politics all top the list.

The thread did just link to a news article about a gun accident. I would have given it about 2 more replies before someone popped off with an inflammatory comment. ;) So I zipped it up.

Not to sound like a Moderator Ass, but guys, it IS on you to read the stickies, the FAQ's, forum descriptions and the like. Okay? We really do try to put everything out there, so you know what's going to be appropriate. That can help clear up confusion when you see a thread closed so fast. :)

It's a fine line. If someone posted a photo of their great-great-grandpa's antique musket, we could admire it from a historical viewpoint, a craftsman viewpoint. A few comments and people move on. A photo of someone's Glock or assault rifle, however, stands to cause a negative emotional response, and we all know why. Again, 2 comments in and there's a flame war. We'd close it fast or even remove it, because of the sensitive nature surrounding the object. So, we continue to let things go on a case-by-case basis, hoping everyone here has a general understanding of the TPF guidelines and respects the owners' requests to avoid hot button topics. It's as simple as that.

This is a privately owned forum, and the owners can have any rules they want. This is not an appropriate place to grouse about your loss of 'freedom'; can you dig it? Come now. That said, we DO appreciate our subscribers as being vested in the forum and liking to hang out here....so, the formation of the Subscriber's forum as being moderation-free (while private from the public eye) came to pass. You can talk about anything you want. Mods might pop in there and read, but nothing's going to be locked. It's your private club. The fact that we have so many subscribers and that forum gets so little use tells us that the 'freedom of speech' issue isn't a deal-breaker on a photography forum. ;) It's there if you want it.

Thank you for the explanation.

Yeah, thanks. I'm totally fine with the forum deciding the rules and everything - it just seemed like a change from previous policy. I haven't read the stickies in a very long time, lol - if they've changed I wasn't aware.

mmm, I think I made the sticky post about Hot Topics in the OT forum, but it seems to me Chase commented after me, so he was still at the helm when you joined and the guidelines haven't changed - we were just tightening things up. This place has been around since 2003, and you know how it is...the larger a forum becomes the more fragile the peace. ;) Like someone mentioned here, I'm sure there are several threads involving guns floating around that are peaceful, but they are the exception. We had to evolve as we put out more and more fires, and that evolution became a more specific set of guidelines. I wrote the majority of them while Chase was still here, and the new owners have willingly adopted them as their own. We've tweaked them only sparingly the last few years.

I guess the policy hasn't changed then, but rather the enforcement of said policy hasn't been as lax lately as it was in the past.

Like I said, I understand that this is a privately owned forum and the owners can do what they want. I don't have a problem with that. The lockdown on that particular thread just seemed premature, IMO.

Can I still call my biceps guns?

Depends on how big they are, lol.

50 caliber weapons of mass seduction.

Yay, a gun thread!!

I was just at Watkins Glen this past fall. It is such a beautiful area. The fall foliage was at peak and it was incredible. Had some good wine too.

It is a pretty cool area. I worked at Hosmer winery while I was in high school. Did you make it to Taughannock falls while you were there?
