HELP!!! Do I buy the 400mm 2.8 prime or not?

Pay for one, slap the other on the plastic if you want them both that bad.

Pay 18-24 percent interest on something that is for a hobby and/or of occasional use?

I'll pass on that.

Isn't that bigamy ? ;)
Bigamy is having one wife too many, a lot like monogamy sometimes.
Only you can ultimately decide on this lens, I'm sure it will meet your wildest expectations and would serve you well.,,, Hey most of my money I spent on drugs ,booze and ladies of the night, the rest I squandered.

You could go for the 400mm and if it isn't everything you dreamed of, sell it again.

You might loose some time, but you shouldn't loose any cash.

Very true and you can still hang on to your other lens until it falls apart or enough time and savings will allow you to purchase the 24-70mm.

I just looked at B&H and that lens, imported w/o VR (new) is 7 grand. Outstanding opportunity. Hell, for that matter, you might be able to buy the 400, use it a month  , then sell it to help pay for the 24-70mm. Hmmm.

Big and heavy? That will take a lot of fun out of tele photography, and limit your mobility to the extreme.

My favorite lenses for nature/wildlife shots are 70-300 and a lightweight 400mm Tokina.

with a massive lens, well.... yech.
