I was shooting some staged basketball action shots and decided to get some portraits. I plan to post the actual basketball shots later but I thought I'd share one of the portraits.

Interesting; I actually like this more than I thought I would.

Everything about this says symmetrical menace but the framing.
The line in his hood doesn't match with the center line of his face and it is off-center in the frame.
The exposure, processing, look all great but those other things are distracting.

Thanks? I'm interested in why you didn't think you would like it. I ask because I wasn't sure I liked it either.

I agree and these are things I'm trying to pay closer attention to. I read this comment yesterday. This afternoon I shot an exterior of a church and wanted to get the steeple in the center of the frame, rising up into the clouds. I thought of your comment and remembered to pay attention to the symmetry of the composition which resulted in a much better shot.

Yeah, I can understand that. In the future, if I do another shot like this, I probably need to use some other type of fabric.

If this portrait goes along with the staged basketball images then the subject should look like they need a shower.


Often times single images don't stand as well on their own as they would within a set of similarly themed images.
