HDR- high dynamic range. You take 3 or more shots at different exposures then merge them using graphic programs. It allows the lights and darks to all show. The more overdone it is, the more cartoony it gets. You've posted this under Digital> digital discussions. If you look at the bottom header under digital it's dedicated just to HDR.

In #1 I see a lot of dodge and burn, some more dodge and burn in #2, a vignette in #3, and grunge/high contrast processing in #4, not HDR.
