How to keep track of what you shoot, while you shoot it...

I'd like to go to a few of the dog shows in my area and work on photography animals. I want to shoot them moving in the ring, standing waiting for their turn, etc...

How can I keep track of who I'm shooting so I can remember it later? I would probably be by myself. I could just write a breed, then the dog's name, but what if I'm shooting a group where they're all the same breed? Does anyone have tips?

Buy a pro Nikon. The instant Voice Annotation button and built-in microphone and built-in speakers are SUPER-handy!!! It allows you to "tag" the photo with caption information right after shooting it. This is one of the most convenient features for shooting events. I use it all the time. It is also good for attaching voice notes on experimental shots, or for describing the lighting setup/placement,etc..

Of course, that's an expensive solution. How about a voice-activated tape recorder from Olympus or Panasonic or whoever???

But how do you know which file numbers go with which person/dog/horse/whatever?

I go decidedly lo-tech. Small notepad and pencil. Reset your file number to 0 before you start and then make a list of numbers on the notepad and jot as you go.

With mine, when the image pops up on the LCD, it shows the file# with it - if my most recent was the 34th shot, it would say 34/34. So I could, while using tape recorder/notepad/whatever, just note the number the notes belong to. When I pull them off the card, the file names they get assigned will have the same # in them, for getting it all put back together again back at the computer.
I assume most models work this way?
