I always wondered what was up there...

This week, I asked the county if I could go up in the top of the old courthouse. They agreed to let me. So I went up this:

And found this:

A pendulum clockwork. The clock face was 1 1/2 stories higher, and the ladder looked kinda rough, so my guide wasn't willing to let me climb it. She didn't know the last time anyone had been up there. Apparently, someone's been cleaning up around the mechanism, though.

A weight on a cable pulls the main gear.

The escapement gives little nudge to the pendulum, which swings in a slot in the floor.
