What's new

I may be the most confused photo student ever...derp

I don't think you typed what you meant to say. Read it again. Raise ISO to lower shutter speed.

The OP needs a faster shutter speed, not slower (which is what I think you meant to type). Raising the ISO would also raise the shutter speed, not lower it.
Technically, the shutter speed is lowered, not SLOWER. Lower means more towards 0, where a faster shutter speed will be closer to zero than a slower one.

Faster shutter = lower shutter speed = closer to zero

I mean what I type and I type what I mean ;)

A beginner is not going to understand this, they have only just learnt how to turn there camera on
Now that I read it again, I see what you're saying and agree. I also agree that most beginners are going to think more in terms of faster=higher and slower=lower, even if it is wrong.

do you mean zero as the normal exposure?

if so, what about the beginner who isn't even sure what manual metering is let alone understand your message.?

Not my problem people are stupid...

I meant zero as a number. The smaller the fraction the lower the number, and the closer it is to zero... Its not photography, its math (basic, elementary fractions).

True. But you need to have a grasp on basic math principles in order to better understand photography. We're not discussing quantum physics here... it's simple math.

And that is why people have problems, because they don't really understand how it all works, because to many people trying to help assume the person they are trying to help cannot understand that 1/30 is a longer (more) time than 1/60.

If you can not tell what fraction is closer to zero.... Sorry bro, you might not make it.

And probably the funniest part about this thread is that the OP was gone after the first response.

But to truly understand how photography works, the photographer has to understand that simple math.

Short of that mathematical understanding, photographic mysteries abound.

A lot of newbies don't get that doing photographywell is a lot more technical than they appreciated.

I AM NOT STUPID,

I have been a serious photographer for over 60 years and have never heard the term zero used in the fashion your suggesting, or your explaination.

I do agree with Keith that many people don't understand that 1/30 is slower than 1/60 just as they have trouble understanding that f2 is a bigger apterure than f11.

And yes, we work with math, in an indirect fashion for both, fstops and shutter speeds, in fact for the whole exposure triangle. but insulting people is not helping them.

I have forgotten more than you know about photography, i couldn't give a **** about mathmatics when i'm shooting i can guess an exposure and it will be close

@ gsgary and ann:

Go into a 5th grade class learning about fractions before you start getting all butthurt. I never said you guys cant take photos, just that you dont know basic math.

A TEST!

Which is a larger number: 1/50 or 1/51

Newbies don't have that kind of experience. Oh and don't leave out the 'e'. (mathematics)

If they have a good grounding in math, they usually don't need to gain as much experience as a math illiterate does to reach the same level.

I don't need to do a test i use maths most days
