No, but it's a decent starting budget. The first thing I would do is check out local camera clubs in your area and join up with one. As for equipment, head over to Craig's List and look for something like a used Canon Rebel, Nikon D3000/5000, or Pentax body and lens. Don't worry about buying anything more than that until you understand all the basics, exposure, composition, etc. You may find that your interests change, or that you're not even really all that into photography after all.

If you do enjoy it and do want to pursue it, start saving. You're going to be into this for a LOT of money before your through... conservatively, $20 - 25,000 at a minimum.

Well, you've posted interest in lots of different areas of photography. These all have their own set of skills and equipment. For example, animals and birds require a long zoom, fast lens. Landscape uses wider angles but may not need to be that fast unless you're looking at nighttime skylines. Even then it depends on the look you're going for whether you can get away with a longer exposure. And of course, people need good portrait length lenses and likely studio lighting, esp for fashion.

With your budget in mind, it might be a good idea to get an older camera for cheap and really work with it a while to get some basic skill and see what type of photography you most enjoy. Then when you've got the money, you can start investing in gear suited for that area. That's basically what I did. My FIL had a DSLR and when he passed away my MIL never used it. So when I started getting interested in photography, I asked to borrow it. It was 7 yrs old by that time and wasn't top of the line even when it was new, but I still learned on that camera for 3 or 4 months before even deciding I wanted a DSLR of my own. And by then I was able to look at the specs and know what they meant when researching what to get for myself. I was still limited by $ of course, but at least I had an idea of what I was getting and felt like it the best for the money, for me.

OP - For that price range, I would recommend looking for used entry level camera. A Canon T1i, Canon 40D, or Nikon D90 would be a good start. I wosuld start with the kit lens, as well as an additional zoom lens ( something in the 55-300mm range ) I would also look into getting a hotshoe flash for the camera as well as a ttl flash cable. It will take time and money to buy full studio lighting and learn how to use it, so you are better off learning to work with the photography aspect before taking on too much at once. You can still do portraits outdoors and use the hotshoe flash as well as some reflectors that can be found cheap on Amazon.com. Many of these terms you are probably unfamiliar due to being a beginner, but there is a glossary of terms at the top of the forum, and you can also search to find many other topics on these subjects (or post a new thread inquiring about flashes or reflectors etc. ).

So its impossible to have a goal of being a professional before you begin doing it? Everyone who has ever watched a professional athlete play and decided thats what they wanted to do with their life, is a bafoon? Also, most things on this forum can be found on the internet if you search long enough. Often times people learn better by discussing with a collective group where they can guage each piece of info on its own against the person giving the advice. Often times simply searching on the internet can be information overload. Is this person a "troll"? Maybe, maybe not, but what is with all of the hostility of insulting peoples' reading and communication skills. Since when did everyone on here start becoming such flawless people? If people want to leave a response to this thread, let them. The only thing that make these threads a waste, are the people that come in stir up a bunch of sh!t by accusing people of things and by dictating what everyone else should and should not do when posting. Even if this person IS a troll, the next newbie that stumbles onto this thread may not be, so why don't we all leave something worthwhile instead of a bunch of pissing and moaning?

to be honest this feels very trolly like some have already mentioned...

otherwise. as already said by previous posters, simply get a hold of a camera and start taking pictures, you're not going to get anywhere without one. also initially focus on two-three areas at a time, really see if its what you want to do, cause as mentioned already, each come with their own set of techniques both on and off camera and their own equipment. learn the exposure triangle. learn composition (understand the basic 'rules' before you go breaking them. know them. execute them. then considering tinkering with them).
