Ideas for eyes....Do you like the edit I did? Or....No?

Garbage?
And I will dull down what I did then
I actually WAS going for over-processing lol, its doesn't go down well in the photography community :)
I wonder if I should have framed the eyes with a fence or something?

Is this a bit better?
Or too boring now, or still over-processed?

Better, the reflection in the eyes is a bit distracting. If it was something more interesting being reflected it would be a bit of a different story, but its obviously you holding the camera to your face. I would also try a tighter crop. Also the right side has less "face space" than the left. As in, it's not centered.

What are the intentions of this photo? What message are you trying to convey to viewers?

I wanted people to feel as if they could 'read a personality" by looking into the eyes...
I didnt really accomplish that very well. LOL
I wonder if I could take a similar photo then photoshop a reflection in? But it would probably look too fake then...
Thanks for feedback

The reason people like bitter leave short comments is because after repeating themselves hundreds of times to forum members they just hate having to write out every single thing every single time. I myself have answered what bitter said in at least 30-40 of my own posts with long explanations as to how badly over processed a poster's image is, and just so you know this is not a matter of opinion there is in fact a technical point where you have crossed the line and have done too much work because the image quality actually degrades.

- The processing you did has erased any level of contrast and definition that was natural to the original image. I knew this without ever seeing the original, I recognized it immediately. This can be a decisive choice, however to this day I have never seen someone "over process" an image and it look good. Professional graphic artist CAN do this because they have the skills needed to go back and actually correct the errors they cause, thus enabling them to get more mileage out of the editing they do before hitting that fake zone.

- The self portrait is just eyes, which any quick look at a site like deviant art tells you that eyes have been done to death. If you were to come up with an interesting spin on it, then we can talk. Look, I understand you can't always be completely unique as just about everything has been done. I however have created very many self portraits, using many elements that have been "done before" but what makes them all different is that I bring my own style and personality into them.

- I suggest reviewing more images in your daily life. When you see a picture, stop and really examine it. What are they doing that makes this picture pop? Besides this forum, I have an entire wall that I have covered from floor to ceiling with photos from magazines and newspapers. On average I really break down hundreds of photos a day, and I will do so with my friends right there as if they have a clue what the heck I'm talking about! They just always end up rolling their eyes and saying, "Oh Joe! Silly you, thinking we care :)"

- You had an idea, that you wanted to reflect an image in your eye. Ask yourself, "Sure it may look fake, but does that really matter?". Consider taking your idea and really owning it. All ideas are corny or cheesy while they are immature and in the mind. It takes you the artist to bring life to the idea, and to help it mature into a more complex thought than just "Oh I know! I'll put a reflection in my eyes of a camera because I love photography!!" Its the hours of brainstorming to come up with the concept, the hours of working in photoshop perfecting that reflection, those are the elements that make a great photograph (or in this case a graphic work, or art in general).

Hope this wasn't too long to read, and that you get something out of it.

The poster above me went above and beyond everything I was thinking of saying. I just want to add that you really have to take everything that comes at you on this site with a grain of salt. I understand that putting your art out for critiquing is a sensitive topic (I mean hell, it's ART, we put our SOULS into it!), but on the internet people will be blunt, that's just how it is. And while there is a line between rude and blunt, most of the time you just have to say, "Ok, that hurt a little bit, but I CAN STILL GET SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE OUT OF IT."

Just my .02 anyways.

shmne,
You really went beyond what I expected that really explained it totally for me.
Thankyou so much!
I can see looking at the original photo that I really did over-do it.
I truly TRY to come up with my own ideas, but as you pointed out it really is difficult.
Im gonna try my best to step up my photography- Like a minimum of 8 photos a day or something...
Thanks again!

Tkot I totally get what you are saying! Thanks for the input :) Its so true

if you want just a picture of an eye i recommend something like this

tylereyestock.jpg

one flash/w omni bounce "like" dome diffuser just below the eye and to the left

then add a lot of contrast, and clarity to the iris itself along with some saturation

people ask me to do this for them a lot, and this seems to be what most people who ask for it like

now i know it's not a very good image, but average people like it

I like the idea, but i agree that the first one is a little over processed and the reflection in the second one is a little strong and takes to much away from the eyes. But i think it's much better than the first.

Ok the first one I find the blown out and the eyes to be over saturated Im very bad for that also. As for the second photo try evening out the skin tone without losing too much detail. the red around the eyes kinda distract me. As for bitter he kind of like wine. Either you like him or you hate him. He can be a smartass sometimes but when he decides to help he can be a load of info. But like his name he is a bitter jeweler and may just leave sarcastic quips. You'll get to learn what each person is like on here. Fighting against people wont help you even if you're right. Sometimes you just need to accept the actual constructive criticism and ignore the insults. Fighting people will just make you look like a troll. Believe me I know.

Regardless,
I dont want you posting on my threads please.
I dont know how much more nicely I could ask?

if you cant take the heat get out of the kitchen, the guy gave you straight forward honesty and wasnt rude at all. if you dont want to hear it then dont ask for it. there is a ignore, since you seem to get butt hurt easily

I just went back and looked at the pictures you have posted. Several of them had been removed but, from the comments, it is pretty easy to intuit what they might have been.

Two things
1) It seems that you want to 'express yourself' with photography and display something 'different' but you haven't gotten the basic skills down well.
You are taking camera-driven pictures and then beating them up with post-processing.
This does not work very often and then it is just by accident.

Try just taking standard good pictures, good tone, good composition, good sharpness and good dof choice.
Once you can do this, then let your artistic urges direct your processing.
As it is now, there is no good substrate to work on.

2) Stop 'owning' your pictures.
A criticism of your picture is not a criticism of you as a person.
Put the pictures up. Don't tell us how wonderful you think they are or how the mother/subject loves them or anything like that.
Put the pictures up, exif in place, and then listen and get what you can out of the comments.
Tell us what you like and dislike about the picture, then everything you hear will be new.
Don't expect everyone to say things in a way that wouldn't make you flinch.
Expect people to be honest; anything more than that is just a plus.

And stop deleting your pictures after they're c/ced; it makes you look like a child.
