What's new

I'm old.

When was the defining moment when you realied you were old?
It happened again today. In just a few short hours, I'll be 57.
Too many aches, pains and surgeries to mention. Just this past weekend, it took three days for my knees to calm down after a night of dancing.
38. LOL. 38 ain't old, surgeries or no surgeries.

I'm older than all but about 3 of the people that have posted here, so far. I'm 53--and much, to my surprise, I have NOT had knee replacement surgery.
I played keeper in soccer for the better part of two decades; did all sorts of damage to the knees and finally had to quit after the Dr. pretty much said, "quit or have surgery in the near future." That was over 20 years ago, and my knees are still taking me where I want to go. Mostly. Oh, they ache. Actually HURT from time to time. Five miles is pretty much my maximum hiking limit. And I have basically no cartilage under the knee caps, so I can't get down and kneel on them with *intense* pain.
But they are MY knees, the ones I was born with, and I'll keep 'em till I just can't use 'em anymore.

Generally, SOMETHING makes me feel incredibly old several times a week.

The first moment I really *remember* feeling old was when my kids were younger, much younger, and I had gotten up and gotten dressed and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and realized I looked EXACTLY like my mother. And remembered how OLD I thought SHE was when she looked like that. :D

The day that I absolutely Could. Not. think of the word for those metal cover things that go on your tires (you know, hubcaps). I actually spent about THREE days trying to trick my brain into coming up with the word--and refused to try to find it via online search just out of principle. But that was after my dad had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, so it WAS a little disconcerting.
yeah, some of you are really old. wont be long before you are back in diapers...:1219:

Okay, I'm about to go into full TMI mode here…

but as a middle-age (alright, possibly past the middle!) woman who has given birth to children, you have NO IDEA just how accurate a statement that is. :dob:

I just had hip surgery last Wednesday.

HIP SUGERY.

Hip surgery is for old people, right?

[shudder.]

(anyone under 30 replies and I will hobble over to your place and shake my cane at you.)

Hope the result from your surgery goes well.....I stared feeling old at the age of 30.....that was 33 years ago....and, I still feel old.....

Reading this thread reminded me of something I saw while sorting through some old stuff from my bulletin boards yesterday:

life expectancy is longer. Theoretically we should all be dead in our thirties prolly if we even made it surviving childhood. But thanks to medical and societal improvements we live to be miserable for thirty extra years..We are cheating nature and she is making us suffer for it. Back when they had ten kids they knew only eight would survive birth, five would survive child hood, two would survive their twentys, etc. etc. course by then the parents are dead anyway.

so look at the bright side, you should probably already be dead. Get over it...:bouncingsmileys:

Hey now! If now the teen-age years last to about mid-20's or even later for some, then proportionately speaking, we're in our prime when we're 50 (as opposed to the mid-30's of old). And.... it's a sign of maturity when you no longer consider yourself immortal and indestructible (more applicable to men than women I think), and perhaps wearing that speedo is no longer a good idea. Plus another benefit of becoming more "mature" is that your kids start coming back asking for all kinds of advice (AND THEY ACTUALLY LISTEN!!!).

I respectfully disagree with the quote. Apart from the aches, pains and too many surgeries I mentioned earlier, I am in FAR BETTER shape, fitness and sexual prowess than I was 30 years ago. I don't have to take any "daily meds" to keep the doctor off my ass about health issues. I eat what I want, I drink what I want and I smoke what I want. If things hold true for the next 30 years, I might actually make my life-long ambition....... to become a dirty old man.

Old? I'm not old! Got a baby's brain and an old man's heart, took 18 years to get this far. ....

I realized I was old (53) a few years ago. I was sitting at the end of the bar one night and it donned on me I was the old guy sitting at the end of the bar that we used to make fun of for hanging with the younger crowd.

Despite my conviction that I'm not a grown up, I still nevertheless feel old when I realize I have students who were born after the fall of the Berlin Wall. And After the fall of the Soviet Union. And in a few more years, I'll have students who were born after 9/11.

They already have no idea when I say "Bueller? Bueller?"

Time to retire!
