Is it artistic or is it just offensive?

it's just an image of that trophy, nothing more.

This sums you up pretty nicely. To MANY other people it is MUCH MUCH more. Because it doesn't offend you personally doesn't mean that it isn't an offensive image to millions (billions?) of other people.

Do you live in the south or midwest, by chance? Far away from any metropolitan areas?

Our problem maybe shall be on some journalists who in their photojournalism would twist the meaning of the picture and interpret it as something bad attributing the offensive nature to the photographer. We have plenty of journalists that exist today. What they do are called by the old Soviet Union as ``active measures`. a type of psychological warfare aimed at perceived enemies of socialism like AmericaBritain and Canada.

I posted it here after taking the shot for C&C and to discuss if it's art or just an offensive image.

I personally think it's artful. Art is supposed to cause the viewer to think or to experience emotion.

Art is a method of communication. If it communicates something good or bad it is art. But, as this, not all art is appropriate or good and regardless of some opinions much of what some call art, is trash. People buy paintings with gobs of paint on it thrown by monkeys. They buy it because of who made it, but it still does not make it art. People can call _anything_ art, that does not make it so.

Yes it does. Art is 100% subjective. Art can be a thought in your head. Anything can be art.

Is it offensive? I can say, with pride... no. Not at all. Nothing offends me.
Well said. I'm with you, nothing offends me. That's why I asked others what they thought... I sometimes think I'm an insensitive !@#$. :)

As a therapist with 40 years experience and a PhD in Psychology if you say "nothing offends me" I'd say you are Mis-Emotional and need therapy. People who are insensitive, really can not enjoy art or music etc. to the fullest extent.

Too funny, are you bigoted towards people who live in the south or other rural areas? It certainly would appear so. I think this speaks volumes about your own prejudices.

I happen to live very close to Chicago, which is where I work. Now tell me, what does that have to do with anything?

Its funny how offended people have gotten... It makes me laugh.

Good job OP, you have created a successful photo!

And an artistic one at that!

ANDS!, I bumped the brightness a bit in the image on the original post. Do you see it as an improvement? Would you like a side-by-side comparison of the old vs. the new?

Actually, if the intent was to create that ominous mood, I would have kept it the same. I thought the photo was "Hey look at the swastika" (I didn't even see dudes head).

Still I would do some restrictive lighting to REALLY bring out that dramatic effect.

PS - some of you need to get a freaking life. Seriously. Get the hell over it.

I think what it means is that given what I've experienced in life I can prioritize things. Why get worked up over an image? Why get worked up over an off color joke? Why get worked up because someone wants to prance around in a gay pride parade? Why get worked up at for anything that people do in their day to day lives? Some people are FAR too sensitive and find reasons to be offended in every little thing. I think these people need therapy as they're probably going to die early due to stress.

If someone calls me a prick in traffic, should I be offended and shout back at them? Maybe stomp a mud hole in their chest? Nah, I've learned to let things roll off my back. As long as you don't threaten me, chances are you could try almost anything to solicit a response from me and not get what you were trying for - unless you're trying to get ignored.

You're paid to find problems with people. If I listed to doctors about all the things that might be wrong with me I would be diagnosed from everything from PTSD to Borderline Personality Disorder - as would most everyone else in the world as well.

Borderline people are... interesting.

Man, we grew up with blacks in public school. We partied with them in secondary schools. We played basketball with them in the gym when we have nothing good to do. Who's got a chip on his/her shoulder? Obama and Michelle!!! If somebody gives you a slur, go to the police and settle them lawfully. I am sure the black cop would eagerly attend to you. Don't use it as an excuse to act capriciously or whimsically like the two most powerful persons in USA. Don't get me wrong, please. I amm half-black evangelical.

I think this thread is calling for a beer break. :D

We've gone from a "photo of an arm with a swastika band around it" to "psychological evaluations" and now to "I played basketball with black people".

:er:

I'm just trying to figure out where your posts come from. They seem way out in left field.

Let's not turn this in to a political discussion. Not only is that prohibited in this forum, but I see no need to bring President Obama or his wife into this discussion.
