What's new

Kill me now..........

Screen name means little to me, I was just letting you know what amateurs are called in the outside world, not a big deal, just passing it along. So just wondering from one professional to another? Is your sole source of income from photography or do you have a full time job outside of photography and you use photography to make money on the side? You didn't ask for help at all, what you did do was complain about how you couldn't handle the location you were trying to work in, I was just offering up my opinon based on experience, that if you couldn't figure it out then you weren't prepared. You have now said that you were hired, then you weren't and now you have been hired just not that night. That's all fine. You wanted chat and discussion and I expressed my honest opinion. If you are preparing for another shoot then fine, that's the correct way to approach it. Regardless of room size there are ways around everything, including background distractions like tv's, if you can see past the subject then you can eliminate the distractions, if you are creative enough you can use the distractions to your advantage. Too many amateurs don't know how to turn bad situations into good ones, they simply point and shoot, you said that the tv is in almost every frame, but I'm guessing you never looked at how you could use it to your advantage. I supopose what I'm just saying is when confronted by a difficult situation you have to look at how to make it work. That comes from experience, so that the next time you can remember how you worked with it, or around it.

Admitting that you suck at playing guitar just says that you are a slow learner.

So Tyler, wow, harsh words, considering that I joined this forum less than 24 hours ago. Well to be honest, I value your opinion, I value everyone's opinions, it's important to learn from others. I was only kidding about the harsh words, some kind of douche, that's some tough love. Thinking back, nope don't believe that I've ever photographed any pissing contests, and how is that I'm trying to pimp myself out exactly? I have an opinion, I have already developed an opinion of you. Did you need some technical advice because I am the least technical photographer I know, I have no problem admitting that, I know how to read light, do I really need to know anything else? I know how to use a camera, I know how to produce quality images consistantly, what else do I need to know. What kind of images would you like me to post? Pick a subject and I'll see if I can find one.

Well I was basing my post on the 0 points of reference that you gave so far. I was just going by what I saw. If you were indeed kidding, I didn't realize it and I am sorry for telling you that you came off as a douche.

Everything I said to Rockstar was based on my experience and how I work, having been in similar situations where images look almost impossible it is up to the photographer to make it work. If this forum is about people wanted to learn then they have to realize that there are more experienced people out there, sometimes hearing the truth hurts, but it is a reality. In photography there are mistakes made all the time, but learning from them is doesn't always make you a better photographer, it can make you unemployed. If I can offer a suggestion or two that will help people avoid the common mistakes then great. I grew up being taught by Canada's father of photojouralism, and I learned how to shoot and use the light and was also taught. "If you can see it, you can shoot it"

Attitudes towards experience has changed, a lot of today's youth show little respect for the photographers that worked before them, these are the guys that put the path down, and unfortunately some don't believe that there was alnything beofre digital. Everything is easy now, cameras do most of the work, if there isn't enough light throw a flash on and destroy the image that you saw. I try and educate, and on most it falls on deaf ears and blind eyes.

Being called a douche, I've heard worst. no worries

If you are advertising yourself as a professional photographer then you are are expected to deal with any situation that comes along, regardless of how poor the conditions may end up being, if this was important enough to shoot then you should have known going in that the light wouldn't be that great, you pre-pick your spots in the room, show up with the right gear to do the job and not complain about how bad it all looks. If you understand light, regardless of how poor, you can shoot it. If you walk in stressed you will walk out stressed, and it you can't deliver something out of nothing, sell the gear and try something else. If you are being paid to do a job, make sure you have the skills to do it.

This is bashing people and pissing them off. It is not helping. You have been on this forum, as you say, for less then 24 hours and you already have 2 people who don't like your approach. Yes, this is a place to learn, but it is also a place just to kick back and BS about photography experiences both good and bad. You coming in all high and mighty waving your d!%& in the air is not going to net you many friends here.

Haven't bashed anyone, just made some true statements, if you had read what I wrote to you earlier you would have seen some suggestions that may help you in future events. You never did answer the question as to if you are a full time working photographer or have a full time job outside of photography and using photography to make some extra coin. I'm pretty sure I haven't come off sounding all high and mighty, and if I have that's not what I'm about when it comes to photography. If I say that I'm really good at what I do and what I produce, that is fact, it's that simple. I'm not going to say I'm just an ok photographer, that's not the truth, apparently you can't handle the truth.

So full time job, part time photographer? that's my guess. If I was to go one further you also sound like the type that would undercut a professional just to get a free ticket into a concert. Charge less than the going rate, offer up everything and hope that someone in a band bites. So how close am I?

Oh your dead on.......since I'm sitting here on a thursday afternoon editing pictures. I do not have another job, I work full time as a photographer. And i'm not even going to reply to your other accusations. I will just sit here silently and bow to you. I'm so glad we finally have someone on this forum that knows photography......phhhhhtttttt.....little man syndrome won't get you far around here buddy.

oh, and about your rockstar comment, I've been around the music industry for a long time, that's why I shoot bands, I have never heard of people use rockstar to describe someone who doesn't know what there doing. That is probably the dumbest thing that has come from you yet. Although, i'm sure there is plenty more. So go put on some Rush or Alanis Morsette and quite being a jerk.

Well good for you, glad to hear you're making a living shooting as a photographer, I have little respect for the full time job holders that use photography as a way to undercut the profession because they can afford to. I respect that you're not one of those. Do you have a web site I would love to see some of your work, if you've been in the photo business shooting bands for some time you must have some great images. The rockstar comment wouldn't be within the rockstar environment, it refers to people who think they are rockstars with cameras, they believe that they are better than most simply because they have managed to shoot some event. They have put themselves at the same level as superstars when they clearly are not.

Web site under construction?

actually yea, the website is under construction. I had a free google site but after moving to denver and going full time I decided I needed a more professional site so it's being built for me now. I post pics on here from time to time. Probably will post some of the band shoot this saturday.

Well Rockstar, funny thing is that professionals use the term "rockstar" in reference to amateurs that think they are better then they really are, it's used as a joke.

Rockstar - noun
A member of a rock band, or a solo artist in the genre (the term usually implies celebrity status, or stardom)

Rockstarphotography said he plays guitar which makes him (assuming he plays rock music) a "Rockstar".

You on the other hand call yourself an Image Maker but haven't shown any images.

Who is belying their screen name exactly?

actually I'm a drummer.....i don't ever admit to playing guitar, I picked it up years ago, but most of my time went into percussion so I never really bothered to learn the guitar very good.

I've been playing guitar for 15 years and I still suck at it.

i don't ever admit to playing guitar

You did at least once ;)

Only because it proves a point that no matter how long you've been doing something it does not mean your actually good at it.

And actually I got the name rockstar because my last name is Rockney and i'm a drummer. A buddy started calling me it in high school and the name kinda stuck for a long time.

Imagemaker: I looked at you website, especially your FAVORITES gallery. If anyone was to critique any of my images on this site, I would hope it would you. If Rockstar would look at them also I think he would be wise to back off and listen.
