I want to purchase a 50mm f/1.8 for my D40. Is there one out there that has the AF-S capability? I have looked and I have not seen one that nikon makes that would work without having to manually focus...not what I want to do when photographing children. Please help!

Check out the Sigma 30mm 1.4... it is a "normal" lens for DX cameras that is fast, and will focus on your D40.

For D40 owners the Sigma 30mm HSM is an awesome choice. Though I am not a D40 owner, I have this lens and am very happy with it.

Playing with razor thin depth of field is fun and can result in some surprising pics.

It does have a couple of idiosyncracies:
- round objects behind the DOF are blurred due to bokeh, of course, but lights tend to be more heart shapped rather than round.

- Some people report that their lens front or rear focuses. Mine front focuses by a VERY small amount though it doesn't affect my pictures at all.

It's a great lens. I say just get it and learn to manual focus. :)
