i'm a block from the camera store
work in cowtown, and have a place in van.

gonna swing by there tomorrow and see about getting me that sigma, i wanna do some car shots this weekend before the arctic descends on us.

oh....and you can't save the PST being a BC resident. They charge you. it's lame. i try to swindle my way out of it all the time buying stuff back in Van. Most of the time I buy stuff from here via credit card and once its billed through say i'm going to do pickup.

If you're in Van go to Black's or Kerrisdale camera's on the mainland. Best spots to grab stuff price wise, island will rip you off.

The Sigma 10-20mm is a wicked lens for the D90 and allows some cool video options as well.

Hmmm, thanks for the heads up. I've been meaning to go back to Van to visit friends, maybe the perfect excuse.

Or mail order from The Camera Store in Calgary, shipping is reasonable to Victoria, and no PST

But yeah, not until the end of the month/early oct until they have the D90 either.

Will keep this in mind too as I'm right now from Edmonton.... just had a baby and in the middle of setting up a move back to bc for late october. Visiting family on the "Big rock" right now

Some retail outlets will let you get away with it as either they a) don't know, or b) don't care. others are stingy and do care. I buy a lot of car parts and run into this problem quite often.

i love dealing with the camera store, by far the most friendly and informative place to shop for gear, unlike others *couc* vistech *cough*. I spent a LOOONG time on the fence deciding what i was going to go with, whether i would go nikon or canon, and the guys down there were more than happy to put up with my stops by after work to hold and play around with bodies and asking questions.

btw...i hate what you guys did to your website :meh: it makes baby jeebus cry. takes so long to load and so hard to find things now. i wish there was a quick way to sort for lenses like there used to be instead of having to scroll through all of them, as the new pages load really slowly.

I gotta come in before next friday and grab a single lens and body bag before i fly home that will fit in a normal size backpack. if i know who i'm looking for i'll introduce myself.

I'm not sure where on the island you live but in Vic there is both a Black's and a Kerrisdale camera. I would think their prices would be the same as in Van...

your a beginner and your getting a d90????? thats like getting your liscence that getting a porsche as your first car.... learn on a point and shoot and learn about photography and different modes and that kind of things before u go and spend 900+ and not know how to use it all

And yeah, we hear that a lot about the website, they're working on it to make it more user friendly at the moment, so you can sort by brand more easily and general usage issues. The slowness is due to the lack of upgrading the server once they upgraded the website. They're working on that as well.

The D90 (if its at all based on the principle of the D80) is not too much camera, especially seeing as its not going to KILL him if he gets overwhelmed by it. At its most basic, in Programmed AF mode, it will take pictures and do exactly what a "P&S" does - half-press shutter, meter, full press, profit.

In a year, when he decides he maybe wants to experiment with flash photography or maybe HDRing - he wont be limited by hardware/software limitations of a P&S and will already be ready to go (assuming the D90 at minimum does what the D80 does).

As for lenses all depends on your tastes and needs:

Landscape/Wide Angle: Tokina 12-24MM F/4

Macro: Sigma 105MM F/2.8 or Tamron 90MM F/2.8

Telephoto: Nikon 55-200 VR

Each one of these lens can be had for about half the cost of their more expensive Nikon counterpart.

I echo the Tokina 12-24, that or the 11-16. Both beautiful wide angle lenses.

Also, another telephoto choice would be the Sigma 70-200 2.8, it's around 1000 canadian, but that's still cheaper than Nikon's version.
