These are very diverse in subject matter, so I'll comment on the one that would be closest to something I would shoot. While the cemetery shot is a little cliche, you may as well play up the subject matter, in my opinion. Moody lighting, a hint of blue in the dark tones, selective focus (done in post for illustration purposes only), and selective lighting will all help the composition. Here is a sample with those items addressed. Keep in mind, this is a very quick edit, so I know there are some flaws. It is just easier to see what I mean, rather than try and explain it.

I would help if you number the pics.
1) Your subject is blending too much into the background. I also think you should crop most everything to the left of the bug's head as the extra leaves don't add to the composition and in fact are distracting. This is cropped, the background burned and the dragonfly dodged.

2) the focus seems soft. And, I don't know, just looks too staged.
3) You cut off the dog's toes! And the focus is soft. The eyes should be sharp. I would say this is just a snapshot.
4) What am I looking at? Besides the word Ford?
5) It's nice and clean but I'm not a fan of the tilt.

In #2 I wouldn't have cut off the top of the gravestone. Also, crop/frame it originally it so that you don't have a small fraction of a bench intruding. Parts of it seem washed out a bit. I'd add some contrast. Also, since the colors add almost nothing to the shot, and it's a stark subject, I'd probably do it in B&W.

thanks for the tips--these are some of my first attempts at trying to control my camera and shoot different ways.

The first is the best of the lot, but the busy background is really taking away from your dragon fly. I agree on the cropping as well.
The second one does nothing for me. I like the THOUGHT behind it, but the poor composition really kind of ruins the whole premise. It doesn't balance, it's not following any of the basic rules of composition nor is it breaking those rules in any useful manner.
The third is out of focus. The composition starts out nice, but the paws that are touching or cut off make it look more like an accidental snap shot than a shot that you were consciously thinking through.
The fourth... It just isn't speaking. It's got a bunch of dirt that is distracting as well as whatever is in the background
The flower is yet another great thought, but the fact that we are looking at the back of the flower really takes from it. I want to tilt it so that it feels right. The simple composition is well laid out, but the tilt is hurting a little.
Your colors seem to be spot on and you are consciously trying to use good creative composition. Your exposures look good, but they also don't look like you are really controlling them, per se.
