The 'best' setting is the one that gives you the light that you want for the particular shot that you are shooting. 
When shooting with it on camera, I'd suggest keeping it in E-TTL mode. If you think it's 'too bright' then you adjust the FEC (flash exposure compensation) on the flash or on the camera.
