What's new

My first urban shot

Drawing a stick figure certainly makes you an artist! Anybody clicking the shutter button is certainly a photographer!

What Leo is putting forth, is that all art is equal, that there is no way to gauge the quality of art, and that all art is successful.
Leo seems to feel that the only thing we can discuss here, is exposure and focus. Nobody should judge composition or communication of intent, because, well, it's art! It's all good! There is no right or wrong in art! Huzzah!

Hmmm...what if exposure and focus are used as creative tools to communicate a message?
I guess we can't discuss that either, because that falls under "artistry" where there is no right or wrong.

very true bitter. Remember the greatest artists out there monet, van gogh and so on all were undermined and their painting unliked. they lived poor lives and they only became famous after their deaths. Look around the internet at famous paintings. How can a beautiful landscape painted be considered less artistic than a squares and triangles placed on top of eachother. Art is about expression not about what is trendy or what is attractive.

I guess that there is a fine line there and its hard to say that you are judging someone's "artistry" rather than the technicality of their image.

If something is exposed wrong, its exposed wrong.

I think what we are discussing now is not the image at hand but rather artistry as a whole.

Kbarredo has a point. The worlds most renowned artists were shunned and ridiculed when they were alive and they lead poor, desolate lives. I guess I'm just trying to say that its not fair or nice to say that someone is not an artist probably because everyone defines the word artist in a different way. Not trying to get into an argument or sarcasm battle, just throwing my two cents out there. Take it for what you will.

Who are you to say what is a correct exposure? Isn't exposure a tool used by the artist for a desired effect.

The art history example given is pretty superficial. The world, and the art world has changed much over time.
The history of art is a rather interesting subject, well worth learning more about.

"its not fair or nice to say that someone is not an artist"
Welcome to the age of entitlement, where everyone is a winner and feelings shall be spared!

If I weren't on my iPhone app reading this, I would "like" Bitter's responses. As for exposure being either right or wrong, let me direct Leo to look up high key and low key photography. These are perfect examples of artistic uses of over and under exposure (respectively). A high key photograph is technically speaking, over-exposed, but that was the intent, and it has a specific look to it.

Anything that you tell me I got technically wrong could in fact be an artistic usage. What really matters is what was trying to be conveyed by the artist. Context is key.

Bitter, if you do this with your beard, i will call you an artist.

now, if a bum was laying near the pallets, I would have called it urban; this seems more like disorganization in B&W. One thing I notice about photographs going for urban is they tend to be gritty and follow a perspective of say those pallets, trash or graffiti and go with a series of pictures through your eyes.

Try a shot with the pallets as your subject and blur out the ally way to give it more of an urban perspective. Or maybe try an HDR style shot utilizing those pallets, go for color and depth instead of B&W to get your idea across; go gritty....

Honestly I like the shot, but there could be more to it; but hey that's my .02

In my opinion, it looks like there are 2 different pictures put together. Aside from that, it is a nice shot.

**** it, its been nice talking to you all, I think its time for me to find a different forum. Since obviously some immature asshole is never going to let one comment go and carry it over to other threads. I swear some people on forums grow some big ass nuts sometimes and talk **** for no ****ing reason. BJ, I hope u are happy with your sad lonely life.....Damn some people are such assholes for no reason.

I am sorry. I really shouldn't have challenged your views. :meh:

If we are going to end this in insults and name calling, may I have a turn? :eyebrows:

You're right, I'm sorry. Shouldn't have resorted to name calling.

Wow, people have differing views on the Interwebs? Unheard of!

Don't let the door hit ya where the Good Lord split ya!

I think this needed to be a horizontal. There's too much blank wall at the top that doesn't add anything. Try including the bay door, or perhaps part of each door with the palettes in the middle. The vertical line doesn't bother me. I like the way it separates the two tones on the wall, but there's just too much wall.
