What's new

My own two boys...

Why bother, most people wouldn't read it, and those that did read it, wouldn't believe it. :lmao:

Thats the problem with photography. People think they can just grab an expensive camera and take great pictures. Thats not the case anymore than you can go grab a guitar and play like Eddie Van Halen.

Can we petition Nikon and Canon to post this in BIG RED letters on the boxes of every camera they sell?

But then their sales would go down by about 70% and people that already knew that and bought equipment because they need would end up paying a lot more for it.

All great points. As long as they didn't put it in the manual, then it surely would never get read.

mikehaugen makes the best point though. They won't do it. Going back to the guitar scenario, its the same reason they sell cheap versions of the "signature" guitars. Like Van Halen for instance. His Ernie Ball musicman probably would cost you $3000. You can get the OLP knock off for probably $250 that sounds like complete garbage and is made from the cheapest parts known to man, if they even make those anymore. They WANT the unknowing who think they have a quick ticket to greatness to buy into that.

I do listen to it. Its just hard to hear nothing good when before I belonged here, people always told me what good photos I take. I come here and I dont know if Ive gotten one good comment. Its kind of a blow when you just join something like this and have a passion for something to have to hear you suck. I dont mind hearing that I suck if I suck but damn. Its just negative and there wasnt much corrective happening.

The only way we can get better is to improve the things we aren't as good at, and we find these through amixture of self criticism and feedback from other people. Just the same as in music, debating, rugby, athletics. We find our weak points and fix them with practice.

The other side is that the people who say "you take great photos" are looking at things with a different eye to what you're hearing here. They're seeing things with the eye of familiarity and intimacy. Here things are seen with the eye of a stranger. So a photo must stand on its own and not rely on the specific memories it evokes.

The snapshots thing...photojournalists make a career out of snapshots. A snapshot is unplanned yes. That is not the same as saying exposure, composition and focus aren't considered, and once you take that on board, snapshot or preplanned, your images might gain that punch that makes someone take a second look.
