Need some advice..

My mom really likes this picture of my kids...This is the original unedited picture. I realize the exposure isn't right, but I would like to fix it the best I can. I just got Photoshop Elements and I'm anxious to learn. Is there any way I can fix the really bright spot over my daughter's shoulder? If so, what would be the best way to do that? Any other advice on how to fix it? Thanks!!

You could clone it out.
I'd probably leave it.
The image needs an adjustment to the curve. It's pretty flat, but it's a good basic image to begin with. A little bump to the mid tones and some contrast should give you a good basic result.

I applied a fairly strong contrast curve to it, boosted the vibrance a bit and sharpened a touch (it's pretty small on the web so not much!) I left the color a touch warm because I kind of liked the feel of it.

Mleek you really made the pic stand out, I need to learn so much I dont understand non of the terms for making this and doing that, its clearly not as simple as taking a photo its hard for me so far

Sean, my friend... you don't know what you don't know. As in there is SO MUCH more than just owning that new D3000. It doesn't take the amazing pictures all by itself. It's a combination of getting away from the auto setting and then knowing how to process. MORE about getting away from the auto setting and making the image do that in the camera. You'll get there, but what you don't know now? Well, there are millions of books trying to get it all down on paper...

Rule #1 with Elements. Never edit the original, edit a duplicate of the original. Click on File > Duplicate.

To help you get started with Elements open pres the F1 key on your keyboerad. Look for where it says, "Getting Started" and click on it.
