What's new

New Camera

A PC port is a flash sync port... something that was lost on most cameras within the past few years.

I use the D7000 (rarely) but I rarely use the AEB feature.

It doesn't seem like you know what you want... correct me if I'm wrong but it kinda just feels like you want another camera for the sake of having another camera. Maybe it'd be best to hold off on a new camera and learn how to use the D3100 to it's full extent before wanting something else.

But if you really want to spend the money now... the D7000 would be easier to switch to than the D300s. The D300s is in a whole 'nother line of cameras... different button layouts, harder to use. I know 'cause I sometimes use a D200 as a backup on jobs. It gets confusing switching between the two.

part of the reason why i want a new camera is cuz of the lack of autofocus motor in the body, now that i know a little bit more bout cameras i want the autofocus motor built-in. Ive noticed DX lenses with AF-s built-in cost quite a pretty penny. plus i wanna get more into photography now since i have the time to roam nyc and start snapping away for a little while learning alot about photography. i know little bits and pieces but i really like photography,i had a blast at the autoshow this past april by myself. i'm somewhat of a newb when it comes to photography, check out my flickr if you would like,i think i have a couple of nice photos, certainly not the greatest but i think i have some nice ones, any help as always is appreciated.I wanna try and get some studio equipment for portraits as the wifey and kids would definately help me out ,especially since its summertime and we can go lots of places to take pictures.

P.S. I was also looking at the d90 as well.

Sounds like a second hand D90 will serve you well, then you can save some pennies for nicer glass.

I just got the D7000 on sale and I have to say I'm IN LOVE with this camera. It's everything I've ever dreamed of. And I even ended up comparing it to the D700 (I had a choice between the two but all I have are DX lenses so that was a major deciding factor). I think the D7000 may be the (or at least my) perfect camera. It's nice and light, small (I thought I wanted FX but... the size of those things are just stupid to me), very ergonomic. Has that control panel that I miss so much from my Canon Rebel XT (makes me wonder why it had it at all) and from what I can tell the image quality is absolutely comparable to the D700. I know the D700 kicks the D7000's butt in terms of high ISO performance but I just jumped from a D80 (which was notorious for crappy ISO) to this thing so I'm more than happy with the ISO performance on the D7000. I know I am very bias in saying this but get the D7000, its cheaper than the D300s and I think in 95% of ways, it is better. Do you really need that many AF points?

I love my D7000 too and would recommend it to any amateur that wants a lot of features with ease of control. I personally prefer lenses w/ built in motor though (less noise).

I am also a fan of the D3100. I love the ergonomics. I hope to own one soon.

What lenses do you have now?

Have Fun, Mick

I have a 18-55mm DX VR AF-S lense & a 55-200mm DX AF-S VR lense, for some reason its not showing up in my signature in all my other posts. I really appreciate all in the help and insight everyone is giving me,thanks

I'm going to say something that may come across and mean and harsh.

If you have not learned enough about your current camera to know that you've been messing with the diopter, you don't need a new camera.

While the D3100 is not the top of the line its a good unit. Take the time to learn it and how to use it before you start thinking that you need to replace it. Their are books on the 3100 and it came with a manual. Getting a "better" camera will not fix the root cause of your problem.

FX body could use DX lens, that's one point coveted by canon users...

I agree! The D90 for the price is hard to beat at this time. But I also think you need to hold off until you learn the camera that you have now. From the sound of it, you should be able to do everything you want to do with the D3100.

PS. I love it when ppl compare a "Crop" to a "Full" and say that the "Crop" is damn near as good...:meh:

You have good lenses and should be having fun with them. You probably don't need a new body but if you have the money to burn I say do it. I personally think the 18-55 physical size is a little out of proportion for the D7000. I personally like the way the 18-105 kit lens looks on the D7000. Again, the D3100 w/ 18-55 lens = perfect ergonomics.

About your sig, maybe there is a minimum post count before it works, IDK.

I never said that i had a problem with my d3100,i just would rather have something sorta future proof for when i do and honestly i might not have the money at a later time,so i would rather do it while i have the money. I have kids so i know some of u understand how i feel when the financial moments arrive when u actually have extra cash lying around. I definately think its a decent camera. I am definately no expert when it comes to photography,i'm balancing learning photography and photoshop/lightroom cuz they kinda coexist with each other. I definately have a passion for it and wanna learn it. The kids and the wifey can definately help me get good at the whole shabang so to speak. I definately appreciate the help and feedback. Also can anyone help me out with a decent prime lense for portraits, thanx again

Yeah, unless you're paying top dollar for a D3x of some variety it's not worth it to shoot 6mp images on a D700. At least to me.

that sounds like your talking about the focus wheel for the viewfinder, shouldn't have any effect on your photos, its simply to make the viewfinder sharp for your eye. for instance if you wear glasses you can adjust it so you dont have to wear them to put your eye on the vf.

thank u,i really appreciate, also which body is better? the D7000 or the D300s?
That would depend on what you need the camera to do.

The D7000 can only do 3 AEB while the D300s can do 9 AEB.

The D7000 doesn't have a PC port or a 10-pin connector, but the D300s does.

There are many other significant features, and functional differences between the D7000 and D300s.

Let's be fair and say what the D7000 DOES have.

Nikon's new Expeed II imaging processor
A 16.2 Megapixel sensor
Highest ISO is at 25600, as opposed to the D300s which tops out at 6400 (Both using the "boost")
New EnEl15 battery, which lasts longer
Lighter

The D300s only beats out the D7000 in fps when used with the MB-D10 and Nikon En el4 battery, which adds an extra 300 dollars. Just to achieve 8 fps.

Each camera has their strengths and weaknesses, and it is up to you as to which one would be ideal.
