Another one of those worst kept secrets.

A couple of thoughts:

1 - 24.5MP means an increase in resolution, yes, but also in high ISO noise. It does make it a helluva studio protraiture camera, if slower than a standard D3/D700.

2 - ISO 50-6400. Wazzat? No more ISO 25,600? lol

3 - 8 grand US... wow, not many are going to be able to afford that. Let's see, if I wanted to pick that up here in Canada today, that would come out to... $11,500 just for the body! :gah:

4 - How does it stack up directly against it's #1 competitor, the Canon 1DS mkIII (pretty evenly I imagine, but there are always some differences).

This camera fills a very specific niche, one that Nikon was obliged into filling. Time will tell how it performs and sells. For me, this camera holds no interest at all. I am more than satisfied with 12 MP.

Indeed for most of us I doubt this camera would suit at all. How many people here have a need (I mean a NEED as in put bread on the table need) for more than ~12mpx.

For me it would be a step down from a D3.

Even at 8 grand USD, I think the camera will still sell. The 1ds, 1dsMII, and now the 1dsMIII were all priced at around 8 grand when considered new. I still see enough of them on the used market to know that someone was buying those bodies at full price.

It is a one-two punch at Canon: the D3/D700 (in terms of ISO) and the D3x in terms of the megapixel rat race.

Oh it will sell for sure.. but to a very small tight market. The Canon equivalent is also 8G's and it sells.

I already have a couple terrabytes of RAW files. I cannot imagine playing with files double the size... lol

Oh awesome! That will be a 2009 buy for me - that way my D3 can be a backup. It seriously helps offset my tax burden to spend a good 8 grand (actually, more than that, but that will be one of the items...) and I can finally sell the D2x and the D200...!

Canon said they were already working on the DIGIC V processor before the 5D MKII was released to help improve speed and noise. The 1D MKIV and 1Ds MKIV should be here soon.

A $3000 premium for more meaningless pixels with poorer noise and speed performance? Meh...

It's been two years since the D40, Nikon, you owe us a replacement (no, the D40x and D60 don't count).

Anything over 10Mp is a waste, unless you're making posters out of your pictures. And just try to email one of those pictures..LOL What will that be, about 20 Megabytes per picture.. Silly. It's like the 5 blade razor.. Why don't they just put 25 or so blades on them?

Its interesting to hear all the people saying that more MP is a waste in a photo - and yet I know several wildlife photographers who use the additional MP - since it allows them to crop the image down more to get a closer end effect.
For those opposed to cropping I can see how its not a gain, but to those willing to crop and image surly more MP is a good thing since you can crop more whilst still retaining the ability to make larger prints?
