All considered I think the poor bird is better off now that its gone....it might have had a chance if you had just put it in the cage and left it alone. It was a wild bird, so its natural for it to have been scared and flapping around in panic. And why on earth did you take it out and "Throw" it up in the air?!!!!!! Really? If it was going to fly away from you, all you had to do was open your hands and it would have flown, no need to lob it into the air..... As someone who feels no animal is disposable - I have nothing more to say on the matter or it will lead to a big argument and this isn't the place for it.

Well my Kids and I watched a 10 point Buck deer get nailed by a car while waiting for the school Bus. The Drivers car was a total lose and the deer had internal injuries blood from the mouth. The police came and we convinced him to put it out of it's misery with it's service weapon and he did. Watching the deer suffer was far worse then seeing the shot in it's brain.

Looks like in your case the bird maybe in pain but can heal over time if its not bleeding or have open wounds. When I was a Kid my dad and I rehabbed a Sparrow with a broken wing.I cant recall how long it took but when we released It, It flew off a healthy bird.

I guess I missed that part of launching the bird in the air, poor thing. If you where local I would have taken it in and brought it in for rehab. I have spare cages because we have parakeets.

geesh. hey, give me some credit here. This is the first animal in my life I ever tried to help..
i spent much more time hunting them than trying to save any.

For the record, I don't agree with lying to kids. How old are they? If under 5, then maybe a little white lie to avoid further trauma, but if 5 or older, I think they're going to know you're lying.

I don't know their age. I imagined that they were young and that is why I said to lie. I do agree with you that if they are older then it's a teachable moment.

Both. It's a robin, there are millions of them.

When I was young we'd just dispatch them quickly with a shovel rather than have them eaten by a cat or some other animal.

I must be honest and say your attitude towards a living creature is pretty sad.
Maybe keep those comments to yourself ok? Comes across like you have to compensate for something.
