Does anyone have any suggestions for a pen which writes well on the back of regular commercial photo paper? I recently did a set of passport photos as a favour for someone, and one of the government requirements is that studio name and address be on the back of the images; I don't do enough to actually get a special stamp made for this, and regular pens don't write well on photo paper...

First thought would just be a sharpie, unless it shows through the other side. Write on pretty much anything (glass, etc.) and don't dent the paper. If it does show through... silver sharpie?

I use an Identi-pen by Sakura on proof sheets etc. done on traditional B&W paper and have used it on inkjet photo paper; however with as thin as inkjet paper can be by comparison it does show thru the back somewhat (at least on less expensive paper). I don't remember if I've tried it on more expensive heavier inkjet papers. It does have a two-sided tip and I use the thinner of the two most often.

Seems like I've seen another brand of pen supposed to be photo safe but can't remember the brand offhand.

Silver sharpie gets my vote. You can easily read it, but it's light enough not to show through.

I think there's a gold, too, but it might be too dark.

Realized I have gold and silver Sharpies; doesn't show thru on the darker part of the photo paper but does on the white part of the paper in light (laying flat it doesn't seem to show). I don't know how photo safe or archival the pens are but that might not be needed for your purpose.

is there even a competitor for sharpie

Will they accept hand written info on the back?

Why not just print your info onto a label that you can stick to the back? You could probably even use the same label to put your return address on envelopes.

Yes, they will accept hand-written information, and no, they will not accept adhesive labels.
