Pre Prom Photos

It was my girlfriend's little sisters prom this past Friday. Her parents asked me to shoot photos for them.

My equipment was a Canon 6D, Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and I think I included 1 photo I took with my Canon 28mm f1.8. I used my Yongnuo speedlight for a few of the shots. It was mounted on a stand shooting through a Westcott umbrella.


I'm not a professional by any stretch of the imagination. I've only shot people a handful of times.

Technically speaking, they are all good images, nice exposure, lighting, etc. The only thing really to critique is poses and post processing.

One thing about prom pictures, you need to treat it like a bridal shoot. it is all about her, the dress, hair, and make up.

She is obviously not fat, but bad poses like the last 2, make her tummy stick out. She probably will not like the last one.

If you have Photoshop, use "Liquify" and flatten her tummy just a tad.

Of the four, #1 is my favorite. In #2, her facing the wall doesn't work for me.

I think they are very nice overall. On the first two even though the cars are blurred they still provide a bit of a distraction in the background and make it cluttered. On the last one I would have had her maybe stand a little bit further away from the shrub to get some separation between them.

Not sure I qualify as much of a critic, but... I like the focal length of the first 2 shots, but I'm uncomfortable with her facing a brick wall. A higher angle on the 4th picture (#4474) might have framed the couple in the background vestibule.

aside from cars in the background of the first few, my only major nitpic on these is the DOF.
the first two were shot "wide open" and have a very small DOF. I would have liked to see more in focus on these.

Thanks for all the advice.

I do have photoshop so I'll look into the liquify technique. I'm not extremely well versed with PS. I can do a bit but I've never heard of that so I'll have to look up a tutorial. I can definitely see what you're saying about the stomach area.


I also really agree with the photo where she's in front of the shrub I didn't know how to really get that separation. I figured I needed another light to create that separation. I didn't even think to pull her away from it. Prolly due to the fact I had to shoot across their backyard pond, I didn't have much room. Thank you for that advice.

Here's a couple more.

One with her turned a little bit more away from the wall. A goofy one with her friend/date. Also an indoor shot with her grandpa. For the indoor one the flash was on camera bouncing off the ceiling.

The lighting is generally soft and unobtrusive, and the colors all seem consistent throughout the shoot. The poses are not very slick, but as candid, pre-prom shots around the house and yard, these are pretty good for the record shots of a special time. She's a lot cuter than those cars you usually shoot, and she's less-reflective and less shiny too, so those things all help.
