Question for frequent traveling photographers

When I was working news, I traveled a ton. I always, always carried my stuff with me and I always, always kept it on my person.

Always carry-on. Usually my backpack. Some airport in Mexico did have me pull out the lenses last year after the x-ray machine. In Guatemala I had two extra sets of regular AA alkaline batteries for the flash and had to dump one set of four to make the guy happy, at least they weren't the eneloops.

I do have a Storm Case that I use every so often when I do need to check equipment. Usually get some extra questions like if I am carrying some medical device or such. And that case has given me the opportunity to see the back-room baggage screening areas at more than a few airports.

Well...now I feel stupid for even asking the question. As I said, I don't fly very often and had no idea checking anything of value in a suitcase is suicide for whatever I checked. I greatly appreciate all the responses. Thanks very much. Rest assured that I'll definitely be carrying on my stuff.
